Dr. Michael Anthony Smith, Academic Program Director & Media Architect, Intel Corporation, USA addressing the gathering.
Department of Computer Science & Engineering in Collaboration with U.S. Department of State Fulbright Specialist Program organized an event on ‘Internet of Things and Big Data’ by Dr. Michael Anthony Smith, Academic Program Director & Media Architect, Intel Corporation, USA. Event was attended by more than 60 students and 15faculty members.
The event began with Prof. Dr. Abhay Bansal, HOD CSE Department, Jt. Acting Head, ASET and Director DICET, welcoming our speaker for the day Dr. Michael A. Smith, Academic Program Director & Media Architect, Intel Corporation, USA. After the welcoming the session was formally started.
The lecture started with the discussion of Big Data-the quantity of data being generated and the high end computing that is required to manage such data. Sir discussed regarding the Intel IOT platform graph and also about the high performance computing involved. Sir also referred to the efforts made by the University of Tennessee and also how Intel is helping them in their efforts. Sir gave another example of the San Diego super computer. Then the discussion shifted to IOT in which he stated that the IOT implies a small number of powerful computing devices in our life.
Sir also discussed the factor involved in IOT- cost, bandwidth and cost of processing that amount of data. He also pointed out that by using IOT all these three factors have reduced in the past and it is expected that it will reduce further by using sensors in various devices. He gave examples of the smart refrigerator and the compressed sensing developed at Carnegie Mellon University. Then he gave the examples from Intel such as Intel Galileo, Intel Edison as well as Intel Curie. He gave further examples on sensors such as Self charging drone, MIT spoiled food sensor and also Airstrip sensor for detecting the heart beat of the baby inside a pregnant lady.
In the end he concluded the lecture by discussing regarding the resources which Intel provides for research that includes Intel Cloud Analytics, Intel Real Sense and many more.
