The 5th edition of International Conference on Trends and Recent Advances in Civil Engineering (TRACE 2024) was successfully held on October 15-16, 2024, at Amity School of Engineering & Technology, Noida. The conference started off with a pre-conference International Workshop on Digital Twin Technology (IWDTT) on 14th October 2024 to set the stage for a transformative dialogue on the applications and advancements in digital twin technology successfully. With participation from international and national experts, TRACE 2024 is designed to facilitate knowledge exchange, promote research collaborations, and address pressing challenges in the field of civil engineering. The key objectives include showcasing cutting-edge research and technological innovations, encouraging discussions on sustainable infrastructure development, enhancing academia-industry collaboration for practical applications, addressing environmental and climate-related challenges in civil engineering, and providing a platform for young researchers to present their findings and gain insights from experienced professionals.
The conference spans two days, featuring keynote addresses, panel discussions, plenary sessions, research paper presentations, and networking opportunities. The detailed schedule includes an inaugural session on October 15, 2024, featuring distinguished guests from academia, industry, and government organizations such as Shri. Dheeraj Joshi, Deputy Secretary, National Mission Clean Ganga (NMCG), Ms. Vidya Basarkod, Managing Director, Ramboll Engineering Center, Prof. Yusuf Mehta, Director of CREATES, Rowan University, and Dr. Nidhi Nagabhatla, Global Council Member, World Agriculture Forum & Senior Fellow, United Nations University. This session sets the tone for the conference by highlighting the latest global trends in civil engineering and the importance of sustainable development. A special panel discussion focuses on "Women in Engineering," addressing the role of female engineers in shaping the future of civil engineering. Panellists include Ms. Jyoti Mann, Senior Team Lead – Water, Ramboll, Ms. Prajnya Nayak, Senior Team Lead – Water, Ramboll, Ms. Papia Mandal, General Manager, EIL, Dr. Nidhi Nagabhatla, United Nations University, and Ms. Kamini Gupta, CRRI. This session highlights gender diversity, challenges faced by women in the industry, and opportunities to enhance female participation in engineering.
A plenary session on "Real-Time Data-Based River Monitoring" in collaboration with the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) discusses technological advancements in river monitoring and rejuvenation. The panel includes Sh. Dheeraj Joshi, Deputy Secretary, NMCG, Sh. Peeyush Gupta, RTIS, NMCG, Dr. Harinarayan Tiwari, Floodkon, and Dr. Anshumaan Singh, Wadhwani Foundation. Parallel sessions are dedicated to research paper presentations, where scholars present their innovative research in various domains of civil engineering. A keynote address by Dr. Sanjay Kumar Shukla, Founding Research Group Leader in Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering at Edith Cowan University, provides insightful advancements in geotechnical engineering.
Day 2, October 16, 2024, begins with keynote addresses by prominent speakers such as Prof. Joseph Schulenburg, University of Illinois Chicago, Prof. Bhola NS Ghimire, Institute of Engineering, Kathmandu, Nepal, Prof. G V Ramana, IIT Delhi, and Dr. Sudharshan N. Raman, Monash University Malaysia. An industry-academia roundtable discussion follows, where leaders from organizations like Ramboll, WSP, and Hilti discuss strategies for integrating academic research with industrial applications. The plenary session on "Industry Leadership Award" recognizes industry leaders contributing to technological advancements in construction. Key figures include Ms. Vidya Basarkod, Ramboll, Mr. Vijay Kumar, ESRI, Ms. Shilpi Gupta, WSP, Mr. Pulkit Kukreja, Hilti India, and Mr. Nidhi Sharma, Assystem STUP. The conference concludes with a valedictory session featuring Dr. Heera Lal, IAS, Special Secretary, Department of Irrigation and Water Resources, Govt. of UP, Prof. (Dr.) Dipteek Parmar, Pro VC, HBTU, Kanpur, Dr. Sudharshan N. TRACE 2024 serves as a critical platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and collaboration between researchers, academicians, and industry professionals. By fostering discussions on cutting-edge topics, the conference contributes to the evolution of civil engineering, paving the way for future innovations and sustainable practices. The event’s success underscores the importance of continuous learning and cross-disciplinary collaboration in tackling contemporary engineering challenges.
In TRACE 2024, the paper presenters and delegates were from across the globe. In the conference, 134 selected papers were presented. Select proceedings of TRACE 2024 will be published as 2 book volumes by Springer as a part of the Lecture Notes in Civil Engineering book series. The select proceedings of TRACE 2024 are Recent Advances in Sustainable Construction Technology, Geotechnics and Structural Engineering and Recent Advances in Geomatics, Water Resources and Environmental Engineering.
The fourth edition of International Conference on Trends and Recent Advances in Civil Engineering (TRACE 2022) was hosted by Department of Civil Engineering, Amity University Uttar Pradesh Noida India on 18th-19th October'2022 in association with Academic Partner Monash University Malaysia and Tribhuvan University, Nepal. The Technical Sponsor was Springer, and the main knowledge partner of the conference was Global Council for Science and the Environment (GCSE). The industry partner was Defence Infrastructure Planning and Management (DIPM) Council of India. The conference focused on the recent advances in civil engineering by building economic resilience and reducing vulnerabilities to external shocks while fostering sustainable growth and development within the country. It also caters digitization in construction field and contribute to the development of innovative, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure for the future.
The deliberation on conference theme was done through plenary sessions centred on Recent Trends & Advances in Construction Industry: Catalyst for Future Engineering, Potential of Valorisation of Construction and Demolition Waste for Concreting Applications: Practical Concerns and Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India): Contribution of Construction Industry. One of the sessions was collaborated by Monash University, Malaysia conducted on the topic “Potential of Valorisation of Construction and Demolition Waste for Concreting Applications: Practical Concerns.
Dr. Nidhi Nagabathla, Senior Fellow, United Nations University (UNU CRIS, Belgium) & Adjunct Associate Professor, McMaster University was the Keynote Speaker for the topic “Are emerging trends in Civil Engineering Pathways equipped to support Transformative Change in the Water Sector and the general SDG agenda?” and key address was given by Dr. Bashar S Mohammad, Civil Engineering Department, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. The panel member discussed that Civil engineering is increasingly embracing integrated water management approaches that consider the entire water cycle, from sourcing to treatment to reuse or disposal. This holistic approach ensures efficient use of water resources, minimizes environmental impact, and supports SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). The adoption of smart technologies such as IoT sensors, data analytics, and predictive modelling enables real-time monitoring and management of water infrastructure. This improves efficiency, reduces water losses, and supports SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by promoting sustainable infrastructure development. By embracing these emerging trends and integrating them into civil engineering pathways, professionals in the water sector can drive transformative change, promote sustainable development, and contribute to the achievement of the SDGs on a global scale.
One of the most important session was conducted on the topic “Recent Trends & Advances in Construction Industry: Catalyst for Future Engineering”, and the speakers were Prof. G V Ramana, IIT Delhi (Geoenvironmental domain), Prof. Brijesh Kr. Yadav, IIT Roorkee (Water Resources Engg & Hydrology domain), Prof. Sandeep Chaudhary, IIT Indore (Structural Engg & Construction Material domain) ,Prof. Mallikarjuna C., IIT Guwahati (Transportation Engg).The invited panel members discussed on the use of modular and offsite construction techniques is gaining traction due to their potential to reduce construction time, minimize waste, and improve quality control. Future engineering will likely focus on optimizing these methods further, leading to faster project delivery and increased sustainability. Digital twins, virtual replicas of physical assets, combined with predictive analytics, are transforming asset management and maintenance in the construction industry. Future engineering will likely leverage these technologies to optimize performance, reduce downtime, and enhance sustainability across the built environment.
In TRACE 2022, the paper presenters and delegates were from across India and other countries such as UK, USA, Nepal and Malaysia. Out of 300 papers, the conference proceedings consisting of 103 selected papers were published. Select proceedings of TRACE 2022 were published as 3 book volumes by Springer as a part of the Lecture Notes in Civil Engineering book series. The select proceedings of TRACE 2022 are Recent Developments in Geotechnics and Structural Engineering, Recent Developments in Energy and Environment and Recent Developments in Water Resources and Transportation Engineering.

The conference focused on the tremendous advances in civil engineering, the rapid evolution in areas encompassing construction & building design, infrastructure planning, structural engineering, transportation engineering, water resources engineering and related fields. The conference witnessed participation from eminent academicians, renowned industry experts, researchers from R&D centers, faculty and students from India and abroad. “Call for papers” extended invite for original research papers in the areas of development of novel cementitious materials and variants of concrete, sustainability challenges associated with the development of smart cities, innovations in structural engineering including seismic retrofitting of buildings, computer aided design, construct, and manage buildings and infrastructure using building information modelling (BIM) approach, strategies and policy development for reduction, management and recycling of waste with reference to civil engineering industry, transportation and urban traffic management, advances in hydraulics & water resources engineering, environmental engineering, big data and information technology in civil engineering and geotechnical engineering.
The deliberation on conference theme was done through 3 plenary sessions centered on trends and recent advances in construction industry, infrastructure sector, and software application in civil engineering. An exclusive plenary session by WISE India was conducted on role and participation of women engineers in different development taking place in construction industry. A session was dedicated to Alumni of the college who are now holding good positions in industry. The alumni discussed the market opportunities, industry expectations and perspective for fresh civil engineering graduates. Guest speakers were mostly industry leaders from government organisation, established academicians from international and national premier institutes, and researchers from established research labs. Around 50 papers were presented across eight different tracks covering environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, construction technology, construction material and structural engineering, hydraulics & water resources engineering, transportation engineering and inter-disciplinary work in civil engineering. The presenters were from across India and three other countries of Taiwan, Nepal and USA. A conference proceeding consisting of 91 selected papers was published. During the valedictory function of the conference, Special Achievement award was presented to a woman engineer and our alumni, Ms. Pravesh Mishra, who was topper of batch 2011-15 and currently posted in Indian Navy. Also, 10 industries namely J K Cement, L&T, Shapoorji & Pallonji Group, GMR Infrastructure, Tandon Consultants, STUP Consultants, Ahluwalia Contracts, Bestech Pvt. Ltd. And Ashiana Housingwere felicitated with industry leadership award.
