‘Waste Water Purification and Electricity Generation Technology’ transferred for commercialization by Amity

 A Technology Transfer Agreement was signed between Amity University Uttar Pradesh and Deccan Water Treatment Pvt. Ltd., Pune for commercialization of a patented technology for ‘Generation of electricity from industrial waste water and self-cleaning of the same water simultaneously without using any external source’, developed by scientists of  Amity Institute of Advanced Research and Studies.

The unique feature of this, first of the kind, technology is that it cleans the industrial wastewater while generating the electric power utilizing the same water without any external source or material. The system consists of two specially designed electrodes of diverse material dipped in industrial wastewater, which generates electric power through electrochemical process and simultaneously the cleaning of water is also done by its own generated electricity which can be reused for irrigation and cleaning purpose .

During the trials carried out with the contaminated water sample collected from Yamuna river under Kalindi Kunj bridge at Noida (U.P), and after treatment, power was generated which was sufficient to light a room and now Deccan Water Treatment Pvt. Ltd. will upscale this technology to generate higher power and rate of cleaning. The wastewater samples were also collected from textile industry and after using this technology, it was found that all dyes and chemicals were removed, electricity generated and water could be reused for toilet and gardening purposes.

The technology has huge potential to be used anywhere to clean the Industrial wastewater while generating the electric power. The technology will prove to be a great boon where treatment of industrial wastewater is posing a serious challenge. It will also revolutionize electrification in rural areas and save each drop of water from getting wasted. The dual benefit of cleansing the water and generation of electricity will be highly useful and beneficial to the Industries for treating their wastewater before releasing it into the rivers.

Mr. Anirban Sarkar, Founder and Chairman, Deccan Water Treatment Pvt. Ltd along with his team of experts visited Amity University and signed the Technology Transfer Agreement under the august presence of Dr. V.K Saraswat, Member, NITI Aayog, Dr. Ashok K. Chauhan, Founder President and Chairman of Amity Group of Institutions & Industries; Dr. Atul Chauhan, Chancellor, Amity University, Dr. Balvinder Shukla, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Dr. W Selvamurthy, President, Amity Science Technology and Innovation Foundation , the Amity Innovator Scientists Dr. VK Jain and Dr. Suman Jain, Dr. Neeraj Sharma, Secretary, Technology Development Board, Advisor, Technology and Policy, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India  and  Dr. G. V. Raghunath Reddy, Scientist - F, Technology Mission Division (Energy, Water and Others), DST, GOI.

Lauding the unique research of Amity scientists, Mr Anirban assured that each drop of water will be utilized through this innovative technology and commercialization of this technology will be a huge success, used for the benefit of common man. Expressing his concern over ecological imbalance Mr Anirban said water needs to be conserved and this technology will be a value addition.

 Dr. Ashok K. Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Education Group thanked Mr Anirban for his initiative and said that he has the highest regard for self-made entrepreneurs. Amity Universities and Institutions will make significant contributions to churn out simple and cost-effective technologies keeping inclusivity and sustainability as the basic foundation. He remarked that the main deficit in innovation is that researches do not get accepted by the industry easily whereas researches should be used to develop commercially for philanthropic purposes as well for the benefit for the poor sections of the society.

Dr. Atul Chauhan, Chancellor, Amity University mentioned that Amity Innovation Incubator have incubated more than 400 young budding entrepreneurs and 70 starts up which have come out of Amity incubator are growing exponentially.

The development of this unique technology has been funded by Department of Science and Technology (DST), GOI. DST funded Technology Enabling Center (TEC) at Amity University has the mandate to facilitate the development and transfer of technologies for commercialization. Directorate of Innovation and Technology Transfer (DITT) under the mandate of TEC has facilitated the transfer of this technology. This recent Amity’s technology will not only benefit the nation but has the potential to have global impact for wastewater treatment for environmental conservation and prevention of water pollution and minimizing COD/BOD in rivers and  water bodies caused by industrial effluents.

Amity University has emerged as a Research & Innovation Driven University focusing on frugal innovation and cost-effective solution for the benefit of society. More than 1450 patents have been filed so far and already 10 technologies have been transferred to industry for commercialization contributing to Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’
