Amity University Madhya Pradesh organizes One-day National Seminar on ‘Gwalior As a Smart City – The Urban Perspective’

Amity University Madhya Pradesh, the chosen knowledge partner in the Mega Project ‘Gwalior as a Smart City’, organized a one-day National Seminar on ‘Gwalior As a Smart City – The Urban Perspective’ on 14 October 2015. The seminar was graced by the presence of Hon’ble Mayor Gwalior, Mr. Vivek Narayan Shejwalkar, along with five esteemed speakers, all associated with the ‘Smart City Project’.

The session began with a formal welcome extended by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Amity University Madhya Pradesh, Lt Gen V. K. Sharma AVSM (Retd) to the esteemed dignitaries, followed by the ceremonial lamp lighting and Saraswati vandana.  Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Amity University Madhya Pradesh, began the seminar with his opening remarks wherein he stressed that in order to develop Gwalior into a Smart City, we, the residents of the city, need to first of all change our own mind set, and become Smart Citizen. He further emphasized upon the various areas that need attention in order to accomplish the Smart City Project successfully.

In his Inaugural Address Hon’ble Mayor Gwalior discussed how Gwalior was added in the list of one hundred cities of India for the Smart City Project. He solicited the support of the common people in achieving the task of developing Gwalior into a smart city, through their active association with the administration. Dr.  Sudhir Krishna, Former Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development , New Delhi was the first invited speaker of the day who enlightened the audience with his talk on the topic – Concept of Smart City- An overview. He detailed upon the requirements of a city in order for it to become smart. The second invited speaker was Dr. Alok Sharma, Professor Architecture MITS, Gwalior, who discussed about The Challenges of Making Gwalior a Smart City. The major areas of concern according to him were the water bodies around the city being constantly polluted with the continuous dumping of garbage into them.

Mr. K.N. Rai, Former Chief Executive (Civil Work & Estates), DRDO, New Delhi, furthered the session with his lecture on ‘Smart Infrastructure’, wherein he discussed the use of digital technology or Information and communication technology (ICT), Smart governance at their best, Smart energy management, Smart buildings and systems, Smart mobility, transport and walking, Smart infrastructure, Smart technology, Smart health care, Smart waste disposal and above all SMART CITIZENS. Dr. S. P. Bansal, Former Comm. (plng.) DDA, New Delhi further discussed on a severe note, the challenges to the Smart City Project aspects, pertaining to Urban Planning. He emphasized on the dismal conditions of the cities with reference to the infrastructure, and expressed his concern on the immensity of the task of improving the existing state of affairs.

Through a very practical and vivid presentation, Mr. Shrigopal Jagtap, Head, Waste Management, Gwalior, made the students aware on the issue of ‘Solid Waste Management’. He emphasized that the first step towards the development of a city is to Recycle, Reuse and Reduce waste. He summoned everyone’s support in making the city clean by throwing the segregated waste only in specified dustbins, and by educating common people on this issue. Each session was followed by a question-answer phase, wherein the students asked their queries. 

The session ended with the vote of thanks proposed by the Organizing Secretary of the seminar, and Dean Research, Amity University Madhya Pradesh, Prof. (Dr.) S. P. Bajpai.
