Deliberating upon the topic, “Gait Training in individuals with Stroke”, Prof. (Dr.) Pradip Ghosh, Professor Maryville University, USA, said, “Gait training is a type of physical therapy that focuses on helping individuals improve their walking pattern, balance, and overall mobility. The goal of gait training is to enable individuals to walk safely, efficiently, and independently. Walking is an important motivational activity for most patients after a brain stroke. Early walking prevents or minimizes the development of indirect impairments. Abnormal gait patterns are a common impairment following a stroke due to the disruption of neural pathways. The limitations observed after stroke affecting gait may include increased or decreased muscle tone, decreased muscle strength, decreased walking speed or compromised balance. Gait retraining through different types of exercises is the most common approach to improving gait abilities, which helps in improving their mobility to a large extent. Gait Training reduces the risk of falls, related injuries and improves balance and coordination. Some of the techniques used in gait training include gait analysis, customized exercise programs, gait training devices, balance training, education and feedback on proper walking techniques, posture, and body mechanics.”
