Experts deliberate upon Reforms in Laws Related to Women Prisoners, at Amity
Amity Law School conducted Regional Law Review Consultation on the topic, “Laws related to Women in Prison (Northern Region)”, in collaboration with National Commission for Women. The conference brought together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss and analyse the existing legal framework, identify gaps, and propose recommendations for reform. It aimed to address the specific challenges faced by women prisoners in the region and explore ways to improve their rights and living conditions.
Addressing the students, Mr. Manmohan Verma, Law Officer, National Commission for Women, averred, “The Consultation holds great significance as it focusses on the collective commitment of the experts and stakeholders to ensure justice, dignity and human rights for all women prisoners. Whenever the government wants to amend any law, there is a process of taking the suggestions and expertise of legal experts as well as the masses. All of us are now part of the extended government where we will make suggestions to the government to make amendments in laws pertaining to women prisoners, in different regions.”
Prof. (Dr.) D.K. Bandyopadhyay, Chairman, Amity Law School, said, “The central theme of the Conference revolves around ‘Laws relating to Women in Prisons’, under which various key topics will be discussed focusing on the life of women inside Indian prisons and the challenges that are faced by them. The theme explores the approach to promote basic human rights and living conditions for the women prisoners to enforce the rehabilitation more effectively.”
Welcoming the guests, Prof. (Dr.) Shefali Raizada, Director, Amity Law School, stated, “The Conference will examine the unique challenges faced by women prisoners in North India, considering socio-cultural, economic, and legal aspects. It will also highlight issues such as inadequate access to healthcare, legal representation, and rehabilitation programs, analyse legal framework, propose reforms, and facilitate collaboration among stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, legal professionals, and academia.”
The Resource Persons participating in the Conference included Smt. Geeta Khanna Chairman, State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Uttarakhand, Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok Former Deputy Speaker, Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Senior Advisor Bharat Tibet Sayog Manch, Manch, Prof. (Dr.) Aparna Negi, Director, Centre for Women Studies and Development, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Sinha, Vice Chancellor DNLU Jabalpur, MP, and Mr. Brijendra Kumar Singh, Senior Superintendent of Jail, District Jail Aligarh, amongst many others.
During the Consultation Review, Technical Session on themes such as “Living Conditions For Women Prisoners”, “Rights of Women Prisoners”, “Rehabilitation and Re-integration of Women Prisoners” and “Legal Framework For Women Prisoners”, were also held wherein Prof. (Dr.) Dinesh Babu, Vice Chancellor, O.P.J.S University Rajasthan, Mr. Sanjay Aggarwal, Ambassador of Society for Mental Space Psychology, Netherlands & Founder, The Learning Movement, and Dr. Randhir Kumar, Chairman, National Human Rights Crime Control Bureau amongst others, shared their views.
