International Symposium on “Advancing Sustainability Through the Circular Economy: Turning Waste to Wealth”, held at Amity
Amity Institute of Biotechnology (AIB), Amity University Noida, organized an International Symposium & Workshop on “Advancing Sustainability Through the Circular Economy: Turning Waste to Wealth”, from 6th to 8th January 2025.
Addressing the students during the Inaugural Session, Prof. Dr. Nagamani Bora, Programme Director Biotechnology, University of Nottingham, UK, stated, “We have progressed economically; however, we have not been able to progress environmentally. Waste Management is a major concern across the world today. Waste management is the process of handling, processing, and disposing of waste in a manner that minimizes its impact on the environment and human health. Effective waste management is essential for maintaining a clean and healthy environment, conserving natural resources, and mitigating climate change. Some of the challenges in Waste Management include lack of infrastructure, inadequate waste management facilities and equipment, limited public awareness, knowledge and participation in waste management practices, financial constraints such as insufficient funding for waste management programs and infrastructure and limited availability of effective waste management technologies. We need to address these challenges by adopting effective waste management strategies and practices and must aim to reduce waste, promote sustainability, and protect the environment for future generations.”
Dr. Shalini Goyal Bhalla, MD, International Council for Circular Economy, Member NITI Ayog, said “Our planet has limited natural resources which are getting exhausted rapidly. Therefore, the need of the hour is to manage and use the resources efficiently. With increased levels of waste, achieving Sustainable Development Goals is becoming extremely difficult. Effective solutions such as use of Green Hydrogen, a clean energy solution for a sustainable future, results in zero emissions since it is produced using renewable energy sources, which are abundant and can be replenished naturally. Another solution is biofuel, a type of fuel that is produced from organic matter, such as plants, algae, or agricultural waste. It is a renewable energy source that can be used to power vehicles, heat buildings, and generate electricity, without harming the environment.”
Introducing the Symposium, Prof. V. Pooja, Officiating Head, Amity Institute of Biotechnology, said, “This Symposium is highly significant since it will help in creating awareness amongst the students regarding the importance of circular economy and its role in sustainability. Through this Symposium, they will also get an opportunity to become aware of the recent research in this area and enhance their knowledge by interacting with the experts who will share their views on this relevant topic.”
During the three-day Symposium, a Panel Discussion on “Circular Cities: Pioneering Sustainability, Clean Energy, and Environmental Resilience through the Circular Economy”, will be held, wherein experts Dr DMR Panda, General Manager, National Thermal Power Corporation, Prof Kashyap Kumar Dubey, Jawaharlal University, New Delhi, Ms. Akanksha Tyagi, Programme Lead at Council for Energy Environment and Water, New Delhi, will share their views. In addition, a Brainstorming Group Activity on “Circular Economy Solutions” and a Session on “Waste Management by Ms. Lakshmi Pillai Gupta, Founder Ammara Technologies, will also be held along with a Workshop on Sustainability and Circular Economy and a Session on “Alumni Success Stories”.
