Amity Law School celebrates “Samvidhan Divas”

As we celebrate 75th constitution day, it gives us an opportunity to look back at the legacy of the Indian constitution and explore ways to make it more effective. On the occasion of “Samvidhan Divas”, on November 26th 2024, Amity Legal Literacy and Outreach Committee of Amity Law School, Noida organized an Online Panel Discussion on the monumental occasion of “Samvidhan Divas”. The event's objective was to discuss the significance of the Constitution, discuss important judgements and articles, and emphasise the crucial role of law and legislature in fostering justice and equality, thereby strengthening the democratic functions of our country. Constitution Day also known as 'Samvidhan Divas', is celebrated in our country on 26th November every year to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. On 26th November 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India, which came into effect from 26th January 1950.Earlier, this day was celebrated as Law Day. In 2015, as the nation celebrated the 125 th birth anniversary of the key architect of the Constitution, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the Government of India declared 26th November as Constitution Day.

 

Several distinguished speakers from the legal fraternity participated as our Panellists .  The Panellists including Dr. Varun Chhachhar, Associate Prof. University of Lucknow, Dr. Gayatri Kapur, Assistant Prof, Bharati Vidyapeeth, New Delhi, Mr. Abhishek Kumar, Advocate, Supreme Court, Ms. Bhumika Yadav, Advocate, Delhi High Court, Ms. Sonakshi, Advocate, Delhi High Court, Dr. MK Ravi, Advocate Supreme Court and Dr. Qazi Usman, Professor, Jamia Milia Islamia.

 

The event started with Saraswati Vandana and Introductory remarks of Prof(Dr) DK Bandyopadhyay, Chairman, Amity Law School, Noida. Prof(Dr) DK Bandyopadhyay, Chairman, Amity Law School, Noida stressed about Ambedkar’s crucial contribution to it.  He remarked that “ Today, we celebrate the values enshrined in this founding document and rededicate ourselves to uphold them in the day-to-day life of the nation. Democracy is an integral core value of the Indian constitution and from time to time many efforts have been made to strengthen the democratic values inscribed in the Indian constitution. A few democratic principles which find a mention in the Indian constitution are: fundamental rights, freedom of speech, judicial independence and human rights.

 

The Panel Discussion brought together esteemed advocates and professors to share their profound legal expertise and experiences, offering invaluable insights that further inspired, educated, and empowered the listeners. The Panelists emphasized the importance of having an in-depth study of the constitution for law students and the inclusion of various authors, such as DD Basu, into the curriculum of law schools around India. He also discussed the judicial developments and landmark judgements affecting the constitution of India. They highlighted the significance of 26th January 1950 as the day when India became a Republic. They stressed that we need to delve into the historical context and understand the visionary leadership of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar . Prof(Dr) Niru Sharan of Amity Law School, Noida addressed current legal challenges and developments, urging the audience to engage with the constitutional framework actively. Prof(Dr) AP Bhanu , Addl. Director, Amity Law School, Noida explored the evolving nature of legal education and its role in shaping a society that upholds constitutional values. He emphasized the need for continuous legal scholarship and research to adapt to the changing socio-legal landscape. Additionally, he spoke about the role of law schools in nurturing future legal professionals who are not only well-versed in the law but also socially responsible. The event was conceptualized by Prof(Dr) Shefali Raizada, Director and Head, Amity Law School, Noida and was convened by Dr. Sumitra Singh, Dr. Chetna Trivedi and Dr. Sheetal Prasad.
