Workshop on “Radiation Detection Systems for Safety, Security and Societal Applications” held at Amity
Amity Institute of Nuclear Science & Technology (AINST), Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Noida Campus organized Asia Pacific Workshop on "Radiation Detection Systems for Safety, Security and Societal Applications", from 17th to 19th October, 2024. Participants from countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and India from the Asia Pacific region will be participating.
Chief Guest, Dr. A. K. Nayak, Head, Nuclear Controls and Planning Wing, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Mumbai, averred, “Nuclear power program, visualized by Dr. Bhabha in early fifties has been developed and successfully deployed with indigenous efforts, thus, placing the country in elite club of countries possessing advanced nuclear technology. The evolution and development of commercial nuclear technology in the country has passed through several technological revolutions. While developing and implementing the nuclear power program, the Indian industry capability in manufacturing and supply of high precision and specialized equipment has also been developed comparable to international standards. The nuclear power has come of age with comprehensive capabilities in all aspects of nuclear power and is poised for a large expansion program. The challenge is to pursue the three-stage program, develop and commercially deploy technologies for utilization of thorium and ensure the country’s long term energy security.”
Dr. Sunil Chirayath, Distinguished R&D Scientist, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, stated, “Amity University has been one of the pioneer private institutions in the field of Nuclear Science and Technology who has sustained itself due to its commitment and dedication to making it one of the best institutions of the country. India is spending a huge amount on R&D, in this area and we need to further enhance the Nuclear Science & technology landscape of the country. This is a stepping stone to many more milestones which need to be achieved in this sector.”
Dr. W. Selvamurthy, President, ASTIF, stated, “The main focus of the workshop is to ensure how do we secure nuclear assets in the civilian sectors. Radiation detection systems are an integral part of safety, security and societal applications. These systems play a significant role in nuclear security systems to detect and respond to any kind of malicious act like unauthorised access, sabotage, illegal transfer, and theft involving nuclear and other radioactive materials. On the other hand, these systems play a vital role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically clean energy, zero hunger, good health and wellbeing. Hence, it is important to have trained personnel who can handle various radiation detection systems to prevent any incidents. The workshop is an initiative to create awareness of radiation detection systems for education and training.”
Dr. Alpana Goel, Director, Amity Institute of Nuclear Science & Technology (AINST), said, “The aim of the Workshop is to bring together Globally Acclaimed Eminent Scientists, Industry Experts and Academicians on a single platform to share their knowledge on developments of radiation detection systems for societal applications including safety and security of nuclear technology.”
During the three-day Workshop, Technical Sessions on themes such as Security & Safety Challenges in the Asia Pacific Region, Application of Isomers and Isotopes in Health Care, Applications of the atom for Agriculture & Food, Detection & Protection systems and Nuclear Industry Interaction, will be conducted.
