Amity University and Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) renew MoU to Advance Unani Medicine

Amity University and the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, renewed their MoU to promote Unani Medicine through collaborative research endeavours.

The MoU was initially signed in April 2019, and over the years significant progress has been made by both sides, in pre-clinical research, herbal plantation and Unani Medicines, with the aim to understand the physiological and molecular mechanism, prevent endangered medicinal plants, and foster research for prevention and cure of various diseases.

Under the visionary guidance of Dr. Ashok K. Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Education Group, who is dedicated to making India a knowledge superpower, this renewed collaboration aims to further the impact and reach of Unani Medicine.

The agreement was signed by Dr. W. Selvamurthy, President of the Amity Science, Technology, and Innovation Foundation, and Dr. N. Zaheer Ahmed, Director General of CCRUM for another term of 5 years. This joint venture marks another significant milestone for both organizations. Both sides were represented by a team of scientists/faculty of Amity, and nodal officers of CCRUM.

The scope of the agreement includes fundamental research to understand mechanism of treatment by Unani medicines, effect of Unani practice at the clinical parameters, joint research in the area of herbal plantation and exploring Unani Medicines to understand the physiological and molecular mechanism, research on herbal plants and identification for prevention and cure of various diseases, research on prevention of endangered medicinal plants, faculty development programme in Unani system of Medicine and promotion of Unani System of Medicines among school children.

During the ceremony, Dr. N. Zaheer Ahmed expressed deep appreciation on the fruitful outcomes of 5 years of valuable partnership between CCRUM and Amity university. He emphasized the collaboration's potential in integrative health research, clinical practice, and public health, particularly in addressing health issues and cancer among underprivileged communities. He highlighted CCRUM's network of 23 research centres across India, its 17 patents, innovative research outcomes, and numerous scientific publications. Dr. Ahmad expressed his commitment to supporting projects with high translational value and significant intellectual property potential.

Dr. W. Selvamurthy appreciated the achievements and significant contributions of CCRUM in promoting and propagating Unani medicine system for health care and outlined the collaborative opportunities in herbal medicinal research, natural product development, biotechnology, phytochemistry, public health and molecular mechanism of action of Unani medicine. He emphasized that this partnership would enhance the scientific foundation and global standing of Unani Medicine, benefiting the society at large.

In the last five years, Amity has jointly published 10 high impact quality research papers with the Scientists of CCRUM and received 4 Research projects from CCRUM in the field of liver cancer, cervical cancer, psychological disorder and viral infection. This renewed collaboration will provide the necessary impetus to elevate Unani Medicine to an international platform, showcasing its efficacy and potential. Together, Amity University and CCRUM are committed to advancing Unani Medicine, contributing to its scientific validation, and enhancing its market potential.
