Experts deliberate upon “Management Strategies for Environmental Health and Safety: A Step Towards Achieving SDGs”, during a Five-day Training Programme at Amity

Amity Institute of Environmental Sciences (AIES), Amity University Uttar Pradesh, has organized a Five-Day Training Programme on the theme, “Management Strategies for Environmental Health and Safety: A Step Towards Achieving SDGs”, in association with Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (CSIR), Lucknow, from 16th January to 20th January, 2023.

The Programme is aimed at building sensitivity and developing awareness on Environmental Health Sciences amongst the participants, learning about the harmful effects of toxicants including pesticides, metals, solvents etc., attaining knowledge about the basic toxicological principles and developing skills for the protection of health of individuals exposed to chemicals at their workplaces and encouraging thinking, reasoning, enquiring and making decisions about the ill-effects of toxic elements on the environment.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest, Dr. G. P. Vadodaria, Dean, Engineering Gujarat Technological University, averred, “With increased industrialization which has led to the economic development, human beings have also harmed the environment, where the air and water quality has been degraded to a large extent. Haphazard and irresponsible planning causes damage to the environment, thereby contributing majorly to pollution. The current disastrous situation of Joshimath is a recent example of unplanned infrastructure leading to unsurmountable damage of the environment. Environmental Science should be made a mandatory subject in Schools as well so that students can attain the required knowledge and skills for protecting the environment.”

Highlighting the role of community participation in safeguarding the environment, Guest of Honour, Prof. Ashok Ghosh, Chairman, Bihar State Pollution Control Board & Professor and HoD Research, Mahavir Cancer Institute and Research Centre, stated, “Before adopting any technology, organizations and individuals must bear in mind its long-term impact on the environment. The community has a big role to play in ensuring that the environment is safe and secure for all living beings. Community participation along with government policies should be encouraged in a big way, in order to achieve sustainability. Apart from fighting for their rights, individuals must also fulfil their duties as responsible citizens of the world so that the environment can be protected.”

Guest of Honour, Dr Bhaskar Narayan, Director CSIR-IITR, asserted, “The focus should be on the implementation of knowledge rather than just attaining knowledge when it comes to the safety of the environment. “Think globally, act locally” should be the mantra for working towards the Sustainable Development Goals. The G-20 Goals for which India is serving as a leader, along with the “Aatm Nirbhar” initiative, Translational Research and Capacity Building, are some of the ways which can help in achieving environmental health and safety.”

Speaking on the occasion, Prof (Dr.) Balvinder Shukla, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, India, said, “Amity has one of the largest institutes of Environmental Sciences in the country. For ensuring healthy lives, it is imperative to take care of the environment. The Training Programme will be highly beneficial for the participants as it will not only create awareness but also help in developing their skills and competencies, required for finding solutions to the environmental problems.”

Emphasizing upon the significance of the Programme, Prof. (Dr.) D K Bandyopadhyay, Mentor, Amity Institute of Environmental Sciences, stated, “Environmental contamination has now become a major global issue with adverse effects on our health and food security. Humans and animals are being increasingly exposed to debilitating levels of contamination, day by day. Replacing chemicals with natural products, decluttering spaces, getting close to nature, limiting screen time and using recyclable products, are some of the ways through which one can save the deteriorating environment.”

During the Five-Day Programme, Plenary Sessions by renowned experts, on various topics including “Environmental Pollutants, Health Risk and its Management”, “Occupational Health Safety and Industrial Hygiene”, “Environmental Research Methodology and Biostatistics”, “Environmental Toxicology and Epidemiological Studies” and “Pollution Prevention and Sustainable Solutions”, will also be conducted amongst others.
