INTERNATIONAL GUEST LECTURE: GANDHIAN THOUGHTS FOR RESURGENCE OF YOUTH

 Modernization combined with globalization has entirely changed the lifestyle of youth in the past few decades. The younger generations these days have fallen prey to deteriorating value system as children continue to become more morally, ethically, socially and spiritually adrift. To address these issues, the Gandhian philosophy of simple and pious living, is best suited to inculcate good values in youth and enable them to live a purposeful living. With an objective of introducing the students to Gandhii ji’s principles and perspective, Amity Institute of Behavioural and Allied Sciences, Amity University, Uttar Pradesh organized a guest lecture on 11th November 2021 on the theme ‘Gandhian Thoughts for Resurgence of Youth’. Esteemed resource person for the day was Shri Agus Indra Udayana, Padma Shree Awardee, Fonder Chairman, Ashram Gandhi Puri, Bali, Indonesia.

 To invoke the blessings of the almighty, the event commenced with a lamp lighting ceremony after which Dr. Harish Kumar Tyagi welcomed the guest and presented a token of gratitude to Shri Agus Udayana, the honourable guest speaker for the day. Dr. Harish Kumar addressed the students on the occasion wherein he spoke about the six important principles that Gandhi ji always adhered to i.e. truth, non-violence, vegetarianism, brahmahacharya, simplicity and faith.

In his address, Shri Udyana said that thoughts of an individual has a great role in shaping his/ her life, that’s why gandhianism appears to be simple to everyone but in real sense, practicing it in day to day life is difficult. For instance, remaining truthful, tolerant, non-violent and respecting others in difficult circumstances of life require a great degree of commitment. He stressed on the importance of mother in our lives. He told there is nothing as pure and invaluable as a mother’s care and selfless love. He talked about women empowerment and stated that women possess tremendous amount of power and potential to perform any task most efficiently. He also mentioned that providing quality education to women would ultimately lead to a progressive and powerful nation in the future. Shri Udayana quoted “suffering opens the eyes of understanding” and explained how the pandemic has made us look back and given an opportunity to self-introspect, reconnect with our loved ones and become more empathetic and compassionate. He told how precious our lives are and urged all to create a kind of life that we would love to have. He further quoted “The earth produces enough for everybody’s need but not enough for everyone’s greed.” He persuaded the students to live a life where they think lesser about themselves and more about the others. He also talked about the importance of learning from our experiences and mistakes and motivated everyone to walk the path of truth and righteousness. Shri Udayana concluded his lecture by mentioning the seven social sins as told by Gandhi ji and reiterated the importance of building a strong moral character in order to live a content and respectful life.
