A panel discussion on ‘Economic Policy and Legal Framework in Somalia and Africa in the contemporary world’ was organized by Amity University. Mr. Abdullahi Abdi Adow - Director, Planning & Economic Development, Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Somalia said that Somalia is in Eastern Africa with a total population of about 14.32 million. He stated that the two and a half decades of conflict that focused on southern Somalia has weakened the country's administrative system, economy and institutions.
He added that Somalia's economy started improving since 2018 and how the fishing industry in the country is the most potential and developed sector which is providing employment to its people. He said that the fisheries sector is full of opportunities because the Indian sea and red sea have a long coastline, rich coastal waters and rich offshore water, large population of youth who need to be trained, develop entrepreneurial qualities, etc.
Mr. Kweyu Suleiman, Managing Director, Agro Kenya shared that his organization supports disables smallholder farmers in Kenya. He further stated the economy outlook and Africa’s potential. He averred that as a continent there are enough resources to take care of its growing population. But owing to some challenges in agriculture, problems arise. He added that Africa is a net food importer. He informed about the agricultural potential of Africa and said that the African economy employs about 60 to 70 per cent of the african workforce and agriculture holds a share of about 30 to 40 per cent of GDP.
He shared that the unemployment rate in Africa is about 25 per cent. Mr. Suleiman said that administrative structure, financial assistance to agriculture, land acquired law, youth and research and development potential are primarily part of legal superstructure.
Welcoming the guests, Dr. D. K. Bandyopadhyay, Chairman, Amity Law School, Noida, said that students in Amity are provided global unveiling through such international lecture sessions. He added that students need to be aware of the contemporary world in addition to class and curriculum to facilitate their overall development.
