Webinar on Topic-Building Research Skills for Career Development and Nation Building

Lecture by Prof. Dr Hema Krishnan, Professor, Williams College Business, Xavier University, Ohio, USA was delivered on 'Building Research Skills for Career Development and Nation Building'. While addressing the gathering Dr Hema said that in research quality is most important as it really enhances the reputation of your organization and the impact factor of your journal decides the quality of your research. She advised students to read the literature in one's discipline and complementary disciplines, attend conferences and research workshops, organize brown-bag research seminars in institutions and brainstorm with colleagues, read trade journals, newspaper articles and magazines related to disciplines. She further asked them to identify gaps in prevalent literature; Make a case: what's your central and novel contribution and state it upfront on the first page, in the first paragraph and don't keep the audience guessing. The research question should have just one question. She averred that data collection and analysis should involve honest, detail- oriented and check for reliability and validity whatever be your research method is. Ensure that you collect data on all the variables that may have a potential impact on your hypotheses. It great to collect more data instead of less.

Dr. Krishnan asked students to write well, clear, concise, and simple. Every sentence should make sense and be related to your research question. Do not include sentence or statement if in doubt and every sentence or assertion should be corroborated with proof. State your paper's contributions clearly that should be refutable. Contributions should suggest action steps for other researchers in the field. Give credits to others and acknowledge weaknesses in your paper. She suggested students to send their first draft to their colleagues for feedback; to colleagues who are not experts in this area. To send their second draft to experts in your field for feedback. Revise this second draft and ensure that it is error free and send their paper to a conference for review. She advised them to take every review seriously and constructive criticism, remember to thank your reviewers.
