Experts deliberate upon “Third Wave Psychotherapies: Skills & techniques for Clinical Practice”, at Amity University
Amity Institute of Behavioural (Health) & Allied Sciences (AIBHAS) Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Noida Campus, is organizing RCI Accredited Continued Rehabilitation Education (CRE) Programme titled "Third Wave Psychotherapies: Skills & Techniques for Clinical Practice" from 12th to 13th December 2024. The aim of the programme is to foster a deeper understanding of the “Third Wave” of cognitive therapies and equip participants with the knowledge and skills required to effectively apply Mindfulness and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy(ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Conjoint Therapy (CBCT) in clinical settings. More than 150 participants have registered for the Programme, amongst them, 100 are RCI registered professional, and 50 participants are scholars, from various states such as Haryana, Ludhiana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Delhi.
Inaugurating the Conference, Chief Guest, Dr. S.L. Vaya, Lifetime Professor at Rashtriya Raksha University, Gandhi Nagar Gujarat, averred, “The examples of third wave psychotherapies include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which focuses on developing psychological flexibility, acceptance, and values-based action, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), which combines mindfulness techniques with education on stress reduction and relaxation, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which involves Integrates mindfulness, acceptance, and skills training to help individuals manage emotions and behaviour and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), combining mindfulness techniques with cognitive-behavioural therapy to prevent relapse in depression. Some of the benefits of Third-Wave Psychotherapies are improved emotional regulation helping individuals to manage difficult emotions and develop greater emotional resilience, increased self-awareness which encourages individuals to develop a greater understanding of themselves, enhanced relationships fostering greater empathy, compassion, and understanding in relationships. It is also effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions and increased overall well-being, thereby enabling individuals to cultivate a greater sense of purpose, meaning, and fulfilment in life.”
Motivating the students, Prof (Dr) Balvinder Shukla, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, stated, “Mental health problems are increasing day by day in the society. People have low patience level, and they are unable to cope up with stress. This leads to mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, amongst others. Therefore, there is a need to increase the number of psychologists who can help people with mental problems to overcome mental health issues. In addition, understanding oneself is very crucial so that we can act and respond mindfully in every situation. From first wave to third wave, psychotherapies have evolved over the years and this Programme will be immensely helpful in providing knowledge and learning to the students of clinical psychology.”
Highlighting the significance of the Programme, Dr. S.K. Srivastava, Mentor – AIBHAS, opined, “People are facing a lot of mental issues in today’s scenario. The lifestyle, daily stress and nuclear family set ups have hugely impacted our mental health. Therefore, it is extremely important to understand the various types of mental health issues and provide solutions to them. It is only when we have a healthy mind that we can overcome all challenges and become successful in life.”
Welcoming the guests, Prof (Dr) Kalpana Srivastav, Director, Amity Institute of Behaviour (Health) and Allied Sciences (AIBHAS), said, “This CRE program will play a vital role in updating and enhancing the skills and knowledge of professionals and trainees working in the field of clinical and rehabilitation psychology. The Programme will provide information about the techniques of Mindfulness Based Therapies, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Based Cognitive Therapies (CBCT) and practical applications for integrating them into clinical practice.”
The experts included Prof. (Dr.) Paulomi M Sudhir, Professor, Consultant Behavioural Medicine Unit, Department of Clinical Psychology, NIMHANS and Ms. Sandy Dias Andrade , Founder-Director at Just Being Centre, who shared their insights on topics such as “Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapies: Practical Overview with Demonstration”, “Processed based Cognitive Behaviour therapies: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy overview”, and “Integrating ACT in Clinical Practice”.
