One-Day Symposium on Current Trends in Media & Communication Studies Research

Prof Ruchi Kher Jaggi, Director, Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communication discusses the nature of media and communication research with the participants.

Amity School of Communication organised the one-day symposium on Current Trends in Media & Communication Studies Research on August 29, 2020. Owing to the pandemic, the symposium was organised on virtual platform and was attended by around 100 participants. The participants included research scholars, students and faculty members from AUH and outside.

The three invited speakers for the symposium were Prof Ruchi Kher Jaggi, Director, Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communication; Dr Vikas Dogra, Professor, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla and Dr Divya Sharma, Professor, Western Connecticut State University, USA.

The Main Objective of the event is to apprise the participants of the latest trends in communication research.

To provide a platform for better theoretical and conceptual understanding of communication research.

To provide a platform to the young research scholars for discussing any challenges that they are facing in their doctoral research.

Prof Ruchi Kher Jaggi, Director, Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communication began her talk giving an overview of media and social science research in India and abroad. She talked about the importance of having a sound conceptual and theoretical grounding before undertaking research. Dr Jaggi also discussed latest research studies from the communication and media domain undertaken in India and abroad. She also discussed the importance of argument building and using appropriate research design.

Dr Vikas Dogra, Professor, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla emphasised on the importance of interdisciplinary research in today’s evolving scenario. Prof Dogra also talked about challenges that a researcher faces while conducting communication research. He advised the researchers attending the symposium to publish their work in good journals.

Dr Divya Sharma, Professor, Western Connecticut State University, USA, talked about communication research related to crime and other social issues. She advised the young researchers to be very careful while conducting research and not letting their personal biases be reflected in their writing. She also talked about difference in fact and opinion in media. Your research must aim at understanding problems around us and finding possible solutions through policy making.

Overall it was an very interesting session for all the students of communication.
