At Amity University, Uttar Pradesh, courses on Human Values & Community Outreach have been instrumental in instilling amongst students a desire to work towards cause of humanity with an endeavour to embrace values of compassion and empathy for a better society. Courses on Human Values & Community Outreach (UG) and Community Outreach (PG) have been offered by Amity Institute of Social Sciences to students across Institutions at AUUP. Human Values & Community Outreach has now been made 2 credits instead of 1 and content from UGC Quality Mandate Mulyapravah has been added in Human Values & Community Outreach at undergraduate level; Community Outreach has been redesigned as Social Responsibility & Community Engagement based on UGC Quality Mandate Unnat Bharat at postgraduate level. New Course on Universal Human Values has been designed based on UGC Quality Mandate Jeevan Kaushal at post graduate level. It is compulsory to take the above course once in program in any semester as per Model Framework to earn the degree.
These courses have been offered with the objective to generate awareness of human values, social caring and prepare students for engaging in social service activities that enhance the quality of life for both others and themselves. The courses involve nature and explanations of human values; how values are learnt and realized; citizenship, mutual aid and collective responsibility. This has given hands-on experience to our students to understand nuances of human values.
The pedagogy includes learnings on human values and community outreach activities. Students are guided by faculty Coordinators from various Institutions of AUUP on a weekly basis. Students work with NGOs and in village communities. Log sheet format is provided to the student who gets it verified by the agency supervisor followed by the faculty Coordinator. Human Values & Community Outreach (UG) and Social Responsibility & Community Engagement (PG) Course curriculum is offered in the Social Work stream and Universal Human Values course (PG) is part of Philosophy stream.
These courses are part of course curriculum and are offered as an elective in the category of Outdoor Activity Based Course (OABC). Students earn 2 credits for this course. Students are required to undertake minimum 4-5 hours of volunteering work in the respective project of OABC courses. This is a unique opportunity for students to work towards betterment of society while studying. Students may undertake projects in outreach activities under the clusters of Women Empowerment, Child Issues, Education, Health, Environment & Animal care, Social Issues, Care for the Elderly or any other as per relevance and interest.
Poster presentation and Viva is part of mid-term evaluations. Portfolio presentation and viva are components for final evaluations.
During the project, students learn to deal with sensitive issues in the community. They often encounter challenges with respect to changing mind-set and resistance to change. Students undertake awareness programs on gender sensitization, health & hygiene, swachhata abhiyaan, teaching underprivileged children, spending time with elderly at old age homes.
Amity University students extensively have taken several initiatives to promote sanitation and hygiene practices among the community along with various NGOs in Delhi NCR, for promoting cleanliness which is very crucial in achieving Sustainable Development Goals No. 6 and ensuring that everyone has access to clean water and sanitation facilities. The students under the supervision of faculty in which they conducted awareness session, cleanliness drive in various communities and schools. The students conducted menstrual hygiene awareness workshops for girls and women and sanitary pads were also distributed in collaboration with Non-Profit Organization. Under National clean India Mission various cleanliness drive on Yamuna Ghats, slums and villages were conducted in collaboration with Gram Panchayats and local Municipal Corporation. Amity University Students have achieved remarkable outcomes in their Social Responsibility and Community Engagement endeavors. Through various initiatives and projects, they have demonstrated a strong commitment to serving their communities and making a positive impact.
Amity University students extensively have taken several initiatives to promote good lifestyle, better health and sanitation practices which can contribute to the achievement of several SDGs including SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality education) and SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitization) and to provide recommendations for improving health outcomes in both communities. The students were able to identify the significant differences in socio-economic conditions, healthcare access and overall well-being, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions and support systems to address the challenges faced by the migrant community. The residents of Raipur Khader, Noida has migrated from rural areas as they faced challenges such as lack of education and skills, inadequate housing, poor healthcare facilities in their hometowns. Future research can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing health disparities and inform targeted interventions for improving the well-being of migrant communities.
Since 2014, at Amity University, large number of students have undertaken Outdoor activity-based courses. In the last five years (2016-17 to 2021-22) total 451 faculty coordinators have participated along with 26729 students. Particularly in the academic year 2022 - 23, 284 faculty coordinators and 11731 students participated in these activities.
