Amity University Punjab, in collaboration with the Society for Promotion of Science & Technology in India (SPSTI) and the Chapters of National Academy of Sciences India (NASI), Indian National Science Academy (INSA), and Indian National Young Academy of Science (INYAS) North Central Zone, marked National Mathematics Day 2023 with a distinguished workshop featuring Professor Apoorva Khare from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
National Mathematics Day is celebrated annually on December 22nd to commemorate the birth anniversary of the renowned Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan. The celebration, announced on December 12th, 2012, by the Former Prime Minister, aims to recognize and promote the significance of mathematics in various fields.
The highlight of this year's celebration was a special workshop titled "Divisibility Test: One Test To Fit Them All," conducted by Professor Apoorva Khare, a distinguished Indian mathematician recognized for his outstanding contributions in matrix positivity and analysis, combinatorics and discrete mathematics, and representation theory.
Professor Khare, a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, Swarnajayanti Fellowship, and Ramanujan Fellowship, captivated the audience with his insights into a universal divisibility test applicable to any divisor and base. He shared intriguing examples, including a novel perspective on checking divisibility in a hypothetical scenario involving extra thumbs.
The workshop was presided over by Prof. R K Kohli, Vice Chancellor of Amity University Punjab and President of the Chandigarh Chapter of NASI. Prof. Kohli expressed his appreciation for the collaboration with SPSTI and the esteemed presence of Professor Apoorva Khare, emphasizing the importance of fostering a culture of mathematical inquiry and innovation.
