NET ZERO CARBON by 2030

Amity University Haryana has a history of leadership in both climate action and sustainability and is the first university in India and second only in Asia to accredited with LEED Platinum certificate from USGBC and GBCI for its truly green and sustainability credentials. Advancing sustainability aligns with university academic, research expertise, operations excellence under mandate of Environmental and Sustainability Policy (ESP) adopted in 2016. As per scope of ESP university aspire to create best practices by demonstrating scalable low-carbon energy transition in campus, advancing climate literacy and awareness, research initiatives, and accelerating impact through collaborative partnerships locally and globally.

To combat global warming and ill impacts of climate change, low carbon-based energy transition is only way out. It can be achieved through non-carbon energy (solar energy) source as well as carbon neutral fuel (biomass). University is advancing to achieve carbon neutrality by 2028 by means of reducing direct energy emission (scope 1 i.e. generator-based energy) and indirect energy emission (scope 2 i.e. grid based energy) to zero and partial reduction in all indirect emission associated with university operations (scope3 i.e. emission associated with stakeholder transport emission).

Scope1: Direct carbon emission (from generator and biomass)
Scope2: Indirect carbon emission (From grid electricity consumption)
Scope3: Indirect carbon emission from university operations

Carbon neutrality is a condition when actual carbon emission is compensated with same amount of its fixation by vegetation. University maintains a substantial green cover in form of native vegetation, natural drainage and regular plantation drive to secure a climate adapted microclimate. The ecologically sound and healthy university landscape is reflected in terms of rich avian (150 species) and butterfly (40 species) biodiversity, which is considered as biological indicator of ecosystem health.

The climate adapted building and ecological landscaping of university campus can be seen as oasis in this zone of semi-arid climate. Since entire region of South Haryana and North Rajasthan where Amity University Haryana is located, is rapidly changing into an industrial and economic hub, it will be not sustainable unless water, air and energy sustainability is ensured. Amity campus can be considered as model campus and case study in terms of environmental and climate action for any industrial and economic activity in this area. Its sustainability journey from nature just building design to water management to climate action planning to operation can be replicated locally.
