Amity Institute of Psychology and Allied Sciences celebrates “World Mental Health Day”

Amity Institute of Psychology and Allied Sciences, an engine of social renaissance, celebrated “World Mental Health Day” at Amity Campus, C Block Auditorium, Sector- 125 Noida with an aim to disseminate awareness on importance of mental health and relieve individuals from their stressful life events

Emphasizing the significance of mental health, Dr. Ashish Sabharwal, Jt. Secretary- Indian Medical Association and Project –In –Charge- Smile Train (US based NGO) said that an average human being lives for 65 years out of which 45 years are spent at work place. From this one can easily deduce how important mental health is. It directly mars the efficiency of a person at workplace resulting in increasing attrition rate, frequent breaks, grumbling about work and peers, increase absenteeism, sudden drop in performance. Doling out tips to surmount this ailment, he said that positive attitude is an armor to fight against stress and anxiety. “Proper rest, balanced diet and exercise are the self help keys to improve mental health”, said Dr. Sabharwal.

Welcoming the august gathering, Dr. Ashok Chauhan, Founder President- RBEF in his address stated that Stress and depression are counterproductive. They stalk all age groups. We need to take concrete steps to strike a sense of balance in our lives- between solitude and sociability, work and play, sleep and wakefulness, rest and exercise etc. India has a rich stress fighting treasure grove which is completely neglected. Yoga and meditation which is a boon for stressed, depressed or grief stricken people are overlooked by Indians but are highly valued by West. The clarion call is to re- discover and re- establish that age old healthy living style.

Presenting a nexus between physical and mental health, Dr. Ajay Sharma - Sr. Manager (HR), Cadance Designs said that our mind is not a separate entity from oneself. When physical health is affected, our spirits, inevitably flags. Many physical conditions are actually rooted in a state of mind. The repercussions of physical and mental health issues can easily be seen in personal relationships and work abilities. Delving into the factual information on mental health, he disclosed that 60- 70% of the workforce talks about stress in everyday proceedings and 50% of the workforces are dissatisfied with their bosses, which is matter of great concern and an organization should contribute its mite in helping employees getting rid of this vicious cycle of suffering even if it costs a little more to the organization. An organization should make sure that it provides adequate motivation and recognition to the employees in the form of training sessions, inspirational talks, family outings, musical soirees etc.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Tuli- Retd. Reader Psychology, Delhi University said that world has never been a utopia, the road of life is labyrinthine. The vicissitudes of life should not dampen the zest for life. He motivated the audience to live in present since past is gone and future is unseen. He emphasized the role of spiritual dimension in fighting mental health problems. Materialism doesn’t bring holistic health. “Inner harmony is the hallmark of holistic health” quoted Dr. Tuli.

Dr. Rajesh Mishra- Founder Director, Yoga Darshan shared some valuable yoga and meditation tips with students and the gathering.

On this occasion, inter- institutional competition “Vichar Samagam- Integration of thoughts” also took place in which the participants presented their views on “Positive Thinking: Path to Holistic Health”. Ms. Akriti Rai and Ms. Avneet Kalra from Amity Institute of Travel and Tourism bagged the first prize and second prize respectively in this competition. A poster making competition on mental health was also organized in which the team of Bachelor’s of Fine arts lifted the first prize.
