Guest Lecture on Goods and Services Tax Act, 2016 by Mr. Balesh Kumar

Amity Law School organized a Guest Lecture on Goods and Services Tax Act, 2016 to bring awareness among the faculty members and students about the basic objectives and principles of GST on 12th September 2017 by  by Mr. Balesh Kumar (Principal Additional Director General) & (Directorate General of Goods and Service Tax Intelligence). Mr. Kumar is an Indian Revenue Service Officer of 1987 Batch and an alumnus of the Delhi, School of Economics Delhi University. Mr. Kumar was one of the members involved in the drafting of the GST, Act. Mr. Kumar has served in Customs & Central Excise Department in various capacities and was posted as Special Director Enforcement Directorate. 

In his welcome address Prof (Dr) P B Sharma (Vice Chancellor) emphasised the need for understanding the the new Laws and gaining clarity with their implementation. The Lecture was attended by the respected Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Padmakali Banerjee, HODs /HOIs of other Institutions along with the Faculty and Students of ALS.

Mr. Kumar while addressing the gathering said that the GST, Act has been rolled out with a view to establish economic federalism and that the benefit of GST will ultimately go to the consumers. Mr. Kumar also explained that by replacing the multiple indirect tax regimes with GST, the cascading effect of these taxes would be eliminated.

Mr. Kumar explained the GST, Act in the simplest of manners and said that it would bring about transparency and reduce tax evasion, which would result in the reduction of prices and inflation. The Lecture was followed by an open house, where the students and faculty members clarified their doubts and also put questions regarding the practicalimplication of GST on consumers.  

Vote of thanks was given by Maj. Gen. P.K. Sharma (Retd.) (Director Amity Law School) who had shared that our Honourable Prime Minister call the GST tax as Goods and Simple tax.
