Guest lecture on ‘How some insects can eat a variety of crops: Molecular basis of polyphony and insecticide resistance?’

Amity Institute of Integrated Sciences & Health, Amity University Gurgaon organize a Guest Lecture of Dr Arun Kumar K P (Researcher of CDFD, Hyderabad) on “How some insects can eat a variety of crops: Molecular basis of polyphagy and insecticide resistance  on 23rd June 2017.

Dr Arun Kumar discussed had discussed his research work titled ‘How some insects can eat a variety of crops: Molecular basis of polyphagy and insecticide resistance’. He had shared his experience of founding evidence of the amplification of a few genes in insects (pests) that might cause polyphagy and insecticide resistance. He utilized whole genome sequencing of both resistant and sensitive insects to come to this conclusion. His group plans to develop some preventive measures/reagents to control these pests.

Dr. Arun Kumar did his doctoral research in CDFD, Hyderabad, where he studied genetics, genomics and evolutionary biology of silkmoths. After PhD, he moved to Caltech for Post-Doctoral research in Prof. Bruce Hay's lab. There he worked on gene regulation in Drosophila to develop novel gene drive system. He is also keen in applying new biotechnologies to address the problems in sericulture as well as in managing serious agriculture pests. He had also worked for genetics, genomics and evolutionary biology of animals, and genetic engineering of Insects. He is a recipient of Innovative Young Biotechnologist Award (IYBA) and INSA Young Scientist Medal (Indian National Science Academy), and is a founding member of Indian National Young Academy of Science (INYAS). He is in the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports journal.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad (Director Amity Institute of Biotechnology) felicitates Mr. Arun Kumar K P with memento of Amity University Gurgaon and conveyed his vote of thanks.
