AMIICON – II

The Department of optometry and vision science, Amity Medical School of Amity University Gurgaon organized AMIICON II 2017 on  1st -3rd April, 2017 sponsored by major Eye care industries Contacare, Essilor, Akriti, Menicon, VisonRx, Bausch & Lomb and Carl Zeiss.  Experts from leading institutions like Shankar Netralaya, AIMS and Mr. L V Prasad was key speakers of the event along with more than 500 delegates registered for this conference across the region.

AMIICON II brought all eminent leaders of optometry and the budding optometrists under one roof to receive the insights on the wide range of topics covered during the course of two and half day conference. The event was graced by Padmashree Dr. Vipin Buckshey, Dr. Krishna Kumar Ramani. The gathering was addressed by Prof. Dr P B Sharma, Vice Chancellor, AUG with his enlightening speech. The key speakers of this segment included Padmashree Vipin Buckshey, Dr Krishna kumar Ramani, Mr Rajesh Wadhwa, Mr. Amod Gogate, Mr Veeshal Madan , Mr Rajesh Kumar, Ms. Ruchika Yadav, Mr. Nilesh Thite and Mr. Yeshwant Saoji.

The second half of the same day included two simultaneous sessions on vision therapy and soft toric contact lens. The former was headed by Ms. Jameel Rizwana, HOD BV clinic SN Chennai and Ms Gayathri Prabhu , Proprietor Bubble vision care, Noida. While the soft toric lens session was headed by Mr. Amod Gogate, Associate director professional affairs J&J Company

 Some of the key points discussed during vision therapy session were the science behind the vision therapy and the case scenarios along with video presentations of some sensory anomalies. During the soft contact lens session discussion was about fitting and troubleshooting of soft toric lenses.

Also there were wide range of competitions including scientific poster, ophthalmic photography, handmade poster competition, optometry innovations on model competition, optometry awareness video competition and the intercollege cultural competition.

The last symposium on first day was by Dr. Krishnakumar Ramani , Principle ESO Chennai  and Ms. Rashima Ashokan  , Consultant Optometrist, Occupational optometry services ESO SN Chennai who motivated and inspired the gathering to take up occupational optometry as one of their speciality by a talk on Evolution and fundamentals and some case scenarios for the same. An Intercollege competition was also organized. Sessions on dispensing - Past, Present and Future of spectacles followed by Ophthalmic Prosthetics, Techniques for examination in neuro-optometry, online sessions on ocular trauma management and examination techniques of uveitis patient, low vision workshop and Entrepreneurship and business ethics was covered.

The key points discussed by Mr. Bhupesh from Vision Rx were measurements and markings of spectacle lenses before ordering the spectacles also a dispensing kit was distributed to the audiences for hands on training. Mr Kuldeep Raizada in his ocular prosthetics workshop discussed some of the latest techniques and inventions in the field of ocular prosthesis and also some of the other modalities for facial deformities like artificial ear , nose implants etc.

Another session was  taken by Dr. Rashmin Gandhi ,Neuro Ophthalmologist , Beyond Health Care Hyderabad  took all the students through the various techniques in neuro optometry examinations like swinging flashlight test, confrontation test through live demonstrations with the help of some volunteers.  Next in the list was the online sessions on ocular trauma and management and examination techniques in uveitis patients supported by Akriti Logistics.

Next Session on Low vision workshop chaired by Dr Sumit Grover and was mentored by Mr Suneel Dikshit Ahooja of Eye & Dental Institute and Ms. Ruchika yadav, Assistant manager sales Zeiss who covered some significant fundamentals of low vision including identifying a low vision patient, and the diagnostic tests done for low vision examination. After that a workshop on entrepreneurship and business ethics by Mr. Sanjay Mahapatra made the delegates aware of the various business aspects of optometry practice such as marketing, advertising,  financial planning and business ethics.

In Parallel Session, The first session started with a glimpse of multifocal calculations and some quick activities on high and low add calculations by Mr Khem raj and Mr. Pushpender Singh and a live patient demonstration together with interactions using multifocal lenses. The next session was Seminar on Progressive lenses by Mr Kulbhushan from Essilor highlighting some significant designs of PALS available in the market and the facial measurements and marking required for progressive addition lenses. The speciality lens workshop headed by Mr Yeshwant Saoji and MrAbhilekh Aneja  gave a detailed outline of the Rose K family lenses and included a live patient demonstration with discussion of guidelines and the steps to rose K fitting

The scleral lens workshop was done by Ms. Roshni Nair , Proffessional service manager Contacare ophthalmic pvt. Ltd. She executed the session by setting up a very student friendly ambience discussing all the intricate details of scleral lens pre and post fitting evaluation, working mechanism of scleral lens and the common indications.

Another Interesting session was on lens care and maintenance by Mr Rajesh Kumar, Professional Service manager Alcon laboratories, India who made the audience participate into an interactive session with some hands on experiences as well. He discussed points like the microbiology and the available brands of contact lens solutions in the market.

An Inter college quiz competition organized by the Bausch and Lomb for the undergraduate students. It included seven optometry colleges team from various parts of the country. Following the quiz there was an award ceremony for all the competitions held. The awards were distributed by Dr. Kamal Pant (HOD), UP University of Allied Medical sciences, Uttar Pradesh. 

The third and final day of AMICON II started with the paper presentation by students from different colleges followed by some questions from the panel and also their views and recommendations to improve the same. Presentations on  “Impact of binocular vision” was made by Dr. Srikanth Bhardwaj, Director BLSO Hyderabad and “Cell therapy foe ocular regeneration” by Dr. Charanya Ramachandran, Scientist Prof. Brien Holden Vision Eye Research Centre, Hyderabad explained well on cell therapy and the animal modelling of binocular vision.

 

The grand event came to an end of closing ceremony with the gracious presence of  Prof. Dr. Padmakali Banerjee (Pro Vice Chancellor) Amity University Gurgaon, Dr Ajit K Nagpal and Maj Gen Dr. Mahavir Singh  with medal distributions to the quiz winners and felicitations to the speakers.
