A guest Lecture on the topic of “Plant Biotechnology in Horticultural crops

A guest Lecture on the topic of “Plant Biotechnology in Horticultural crops” was organized for the students of Masters as well as research scholars some students pursuing graduate courses also attended lecture. Dr. Maneesh Mishra, Principal Scientist, Crop Improvement Division, Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture, (CISH) (ICAR), Lucknow delivered talk on the prospects and application of plant biotechnology in the field of horticulture.

Dr. Mishra emphasized on the challenges that scientists are facing to feed growing population of the country as well as ways for generation of revenue by exporting our produce. He also informed about the emerging scenario and options to meet out the demand. Besides informing students of India’s leading laboratories working in this field he also discuss components of horticulture.

Dr. Mishra also discussed role of transgenic technology in horticulture. He also discussed some case studies of papaya transgenic, BT brinjal, Flavor- savor tomatoes. Dr. Mishra concluded his lecture by informing students about job prospects and scope of the field of biotechnology as well as its application in horticulture. Students asked questions on the gene transfer methods and selection of explants for transgenic development. Dr. Mishra has provided handouts of his lecture to all the students and also soft copy of his presentation too for further reference.
