Visit to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust

Amity Business School had organized an Industrial Visit for the students of MBA 1,MBA 3 and BBA 5 to Jawaharlal Nehru Port on 9th September, 2016 to help them understand how ports work and also various import and export procedures.The visit was organized by Dr Aprita Shrivastava and accompanied by Dr.Jatin Trivedi and Prof Projit De.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) at Navi Mumbai (formerly known as the Nhava Sheva Port) located within the Mumbai harbour on the west coast of India, was commissioned on 26th May 1989. It occupies a place of prominence among the major Indian ports. It is the second youngest and one of the most modern major ports of the country. Though it was initially planned to be a “satellite port” to the Mumbai Port with the purpose of decongesting traffic at the latter, eventually it was developed as an independent port on its own right and it became the country’s largest container port. Jnpt has 4 terminals Jawaharlal Nehru Port Container Terminal (JNPCT) ,Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT-DP World), Gateway Terminals India (GTI-APM Terminals), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited(BPCL).

The first stop for the students was “shallow water berth”.The students could see the APM terminal. The instructor mentioned about its length which was 448m long, then explained about the signal system at their and also about the vessel parking system. JNPT covers around 2584 hectares The height of the various vessels range from 20ft, 40 ft and 45 ft. The vessels move after 24hrs after attaching.

The studentswere also shown the scanner were vessels are scanned for container damage.The colored containers contain mainly food and white containers carried things like mutton, chicken, medicines etc. For power recharge of the containers refer plugs. JNPT has 1932 refer plugs and JNPT charges 305rs/hr. The instructor then explained about vessel operation, yard operation and Rail operation. The next stop was the Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT-DP World).It is a private port and on lease for 30 years ,the operations of this port started from 1999.the depth of this port is 14m.The instructor then explained about the handling operations and how speader works.

The visit To JNP port helped the students understand how the JN Port has already established itself as the major catalyst for the trade & commerce in the country with a strong commitment to provide seamless service to the customers & as the India’s prime facilitator of international trade & logistics.
