Amity Institute of Biotechnology organizes Popular Lecture Series on Biotechnology on September 7 to 9, 2016

Day 01 :Inauguration Ceremony and lecture session

Amity Institute of Biotechnology for the three consecutive years since 2014 organized Popular Lecture Series on Biotechnology. This year three days Popular Lecture Series on Biotechnology (07-09 September 2016) was inaugurated on 7th September 2016 by Lamp lighting ceremony by respected dignitaries: Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Amity University Madhya Pradesh Lt. Gen. V. K. Sharma, AVSM (Retd.), Pro-Vice chancellor Prof. (Dr.) M. P. Kaushik, Director AIB and Dean Academics Prof. (Dr.) R. S. Tomar, Dean Research, Prof. (Dr.) S. P. Bajpai and invited speaker Prof. (Dr.) Anjana Sharma, Professor & Head, Dept. of Biological Science, Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur.

Lt. Gen. V. K. Sharma, AVSM (Retd.) Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Amity University Madhya Pradesh, addressed the gathering and pointed out the role and future prospects of Biotechnology. He emphasized on the remedies of potent human diseases developed as a result of various environmental stresses. He further motivated students for doing research in the field of management and mitigation of communicable and non communicable diseases. He welcomed the guest speaker and congratulated the members of organizing committee and wished all the success for the lecture Series. Thereafter the lecture session started with the introduction of the invited speaker.

Prof. (Dr). Anjana Sharma, Professor & Head, Dept. of Biological Science, Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur delivered her talk on “A Call for Action: Managing Some of the Most Concerned Diseases using Biotechnology”, to a large gathering of students including those from various schools of Gwalior. Dr. Sharma’s lecture was focused on action, management and mitigation of communicable and non communicable diseases. She discussed the facts starting from the requirement of food, spreading of various diseases as a result of uncountable, unpredictable physical and biological challenges together with its mitigation strategies. During her lecture, she also mentioned the role of proteins in pharmaceutical along with the impact of environmental pathogens as a threat to human life. She also elaborated the effect and role of protein biomolecules used in food and feed industries such as hormones, growth factors, antibodies, enzymes, interferons, blood factors etc. She discussed in detail about the use of microbial enzymes such as Streptokinase, Asparaginase and Phytase as therapeutics and pointed their role in treatment of various diseases. After the talk, there was interaction of students with guest speaker Dr. Anjana Sharma on various issues of biotechnology.

The lecture ended with concluding remarks by Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Singh Tomar, Director, Amity Institute of Biotechnology and Dean (Academics), Amity University, Gwalior. In his remarks he emphasized on the development and utilization of microbial enzymes and proteins to cure potent human diseases in future. He further concluded the lecture session with a Vote of Thanks to guest speaker for her informative talk.

Day 02: Popular Lecture Series on Biotechnology:

Amity Institute of Biotechnology, Amity University, Gwalior organised the second lecture of Popular Lecture Series on 8th Sept. 2016.  The session begins with welcome of eminent speaker Prof. (Dr.) R.S. Tomar, Director AIB & Dean Academics, AUMP. He delivered his lecture on “Biosensors: A New Tool in Medical Diagnostics” to a large gathering of students including those from various schools of Gwalior. Prof.Tomar’s lecture was focused on simple and rapid detection method of pathogens by using nanobiosensors. He discussed the facts of nanobiosensors as a breakthrough in the improvement of current diagnostic technologies. During his lecture, he elaborated the features and futures of a diagnostic nanobiosensor. He also elaborated the structural parts of a typical biosensor consisting recognition elements, transducer and processor along with the development of nanoparticles based biosensors. He also discussed about various analytes like enzymes, proteins, antibodies and nucleic acids, detected by these peculiar nanobiosensors. He emphasized the fact that how nanostructure based nanobiosensors have more sensitivity and conductance compared to conventional sensors together with its utility in various applications such as environmental detection, medical diagnostic development and food sectors. He further motivated students for doing research in the field of the development of new nanoparticles based nanobiosensors in future. In his concluding remarks Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Singh Tomar, emphasized on the applications of nanobiosensors in clinical diagnosis, detection of infectious microbial pathogens and blood molecular fingerprinting. The session was followed by interaction of students with expert speaker Prof. (Dr.) R.S. Tomar.

The session concluded with a Vote of Thanks to distinguish speaker for his informative talk. Vote of thanks was extended by Dr. Shuchi Kaushik, Assistant Professor, AIB.

Day 03: Popular Lecture Series on Biotechnology:

The third lecture in the Popular Lecture Series was held on 9th Sept. 2016.  The session begins with welcome of eminent guest speaker Prof. (Dr.) Abbas Ali Mahdi, Head, Department of Biochemistry, King George’s Medical University, Lucknow. He delivered his lecture on “Fascinating Use of Medical Biotechnology in the New Millennium”.  Prof. Mahdi’s lecture was focused on recent advances in biotechnology and its application in various fields through genetic manipulations. Since human beings are exposed to many toxic chemicals and mineral elements, heavy metals like Lead, Aluminum, Mercury, Arsenic and Fluoride and many mores therefore accumulation of such  metals beyond their permissible limit exhibit the negative and adverse impact on human health due to their toxicity. However their toxic impact can be reduced by recent biotechnological approaches and diagnostic measures to timely address the diseases. During his lecture, he also mentioned various diseases due to Lead, Aluminum and fluoride toxicity and their impact on human health, their causes, symptoms and methods of diagnosis as well as treatment. He also described various other hazardous toxic metals, their significant exposure, source of exposure, distribution in the body, the mechanism of metal toxicity and ultimately their impact on human health. The lecture  was followed by interaction of students with expert speaker Prof. (Dr.) Abbas Ali Mahdi on different issues of metal toxicities and there preventive measures.

The lecture session concluded with the remarks by Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Singh Tomar, Director, Amity Institute of Biotechnology and Dean (Academics), Amity University, Gwalior. In his concluding remarks he emphasized that medical biotechnology has not only applications in the production of useful chemicals but it may also be used to destroy toxic metals which are hazardous for human health.

Prof. (Dr.) R.S. Tomar concluded the session by expressing his vote of thanks to the invited dignitaries and experts from various fields who spared their valuable time for the Popular Lecturer Series, all the students who came across to AUMP from different schools of the Gwalior to attend the lecture series and made it a mega success. He also thanked all the organizing committee members, faculty members and students of AUMP.
