Amity Institute of Biotechnology organized Guest Lecture on Patent Filing

Amity Institute of Biotechnology organized guest lecture by Dr. Shaleen Raizada, MD & CEO, SanShadow Group on 23rd August 2016 on Patent Filing. Dr. Raizada started her talk with the example of tearing a sheet of paper into three pieces with a single swap of hand. Though there are four possible ways of doing the task, two students B.Sc. (Biotech) showed two ways. It means the same thing can be achieved by several processes. Speaker gave the example of invention of coke can opener. The inventor claimed only one cent/ can, this made his total earning 4.5 million USD/ month. Patent is a legal right, which is granted by the Govt. and it prevents other people making, using or selling the inventor’s invention.

She elaborated that the condition for getting a patent is that it should be novel, should not be obvious and should be industrially applicable. The information must not go to public domain before the patent is filed. Students must be careful about putting their innovation in blogs. Then the she emphasized on the importance of product commercialization. quoting a classic example of WINDOWS OS was developed by IBM, they sold it to Microsoft only for 2000 USD.

Then Dr. Raizada told about the importance of trade mark. In this regard she gave example of ‘Coco Cola’ and ‘Patanjali’. She also mentioned that according to Indian patent act, software cannot be patented; in this case the inventor should apply for copyright. The day patent is filed, inventor should go for commercialization. Because the protection for the patent starts from the very date when the patent is filed.

The session was very much interactive. Prof. Rajendra Prasad, Dean- Research and Director - Amity Institute of Biotechnology concluded the session. Overall the visit of Dr. Raizada had a great impact in creating motivation within the participants of the program.
