A Report on Talk By Dr. JayaKumar

Amity Institute of Biotechnology in its “ABC Seminar Series” organized a talk by Dr. Jayakumar, MD, Anderson Cancer Centre, University of Texas, USA, on March 2nd 2016. Dr. Jayakumar has a long association with Prof. R. Prasad since his graduate study, which was under the mentorship of Prof. Prasad. Opening remarks was delivered by Honorable Vice Chancellor, Amity University Haryana, Prof. P.B. Sharma followed by Prof. Prasad introducing Dr. Jayakumar.

Dr.Jayakumar delivered a talk on “Development of Small Molecule Inhibitors for Cancer Therapy”. He talked about the various types of cancer and their prognosis. He discussed about different signaling cascades mainly STAT3 (Signal-Transducer and Activator of Transcription-3), HIF-1 alpha (Hypoxia-Inducible Transcription Factor), and c-MYC and their roles in progression of cancer. He shared his data where he developed an analog WP1066 of natural product caffeic acid benzyl ester (CABE) using molecular modeling. He demonstrated his research data showing WP1066 being an effective inhibitor of STAT3 thus shows anti tumor activity in wide range of human cancer cell lines and in variety of animal models. He also shared his research data demonstrating that WP1066 is a deubiquitinase inhibitor and interferes with proteosomal degradation pathway.

Overall Session, Dr. Jayakumar enlightened us on how development of small molecules from natural products could be useful in mitigating progression of cancer. His talk attracted various questions regarding our understanding ofthe disease. With such sessions and lectures, we hope to renew our current understanding about the occurrence, prognosis and progression of cancer.
