INSPIRE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM 2015

 

Day 1: 24 November, 2015

Amity University Gurgaon kick-started the 5-day event on 24 Nov 2015, Inspire: Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research. Inspire is an initiative of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India and aims at not only attracting brilliant minds to study  science at an early stage as also keeping them attached to the excitement experienced by them in pursuing science. As many as 334 students from different schools of Delhi and Gurgaon participated in the event.

The first day of the internship program started with the floral welcome of the dignitaries. The event was inaugurated with an auspicious lamp lighting ceremony by the chief guest Prof. Vijay K. Chaudhary, Department of Biochemistry & Chairman Interim Governing Council WUS Health Centre (IGC-WUSHC), University of Delhi, Honorable Vice Chancellor, Amity University Gurgaon, Prof (Dr) P. B. Sharma, Pro Vice Chancellor, Amity University Gurgaon, Prof (Dr) Padmakali Banerjee, Dr K. L. Chopra, Ex- Director, IIT – Kharagpur and other dignitaries.

In the Inaugural Session, a detailed presentation was made by Mr. Sachin Juneja, Director Market Promotion, Amity University Gurgaon . Mr. Juneja stated the vision of Amity’s Founder President – Dr Ashok K Chauhan of making the Amity Group a leader in the field of knowledge, research and innovation. He added that at Amity modernity blends with tradition. Further speaking on the occasion he highlighted the awards that university has won in a short span of time for its achievements on research concerning the ecosystem and tremendous strides the AUG has made towards industry integration. He presented the key features of Amity Group as a whole and its widespread campuses across the globe, its future endeavors, and philosophies of teaching, centers of recognition and accreditations, industry integration and other fields of excellence. He concluded with an appropriate quote - "An Amitian, like a diamond, is forever".

Prof (Dr.) Padmakali Banerjee, Pro- Vice Chancellor, Amity University Gurgaon, addressed the young minds with her motivating and thought provoking welcome speech. She started her talk with a very impressive quote- "today is historical and look at your future everyone's going to be an eminent scientist". The whole aspect behind "INSPIRE" is to excite us how towards sensitizing ourselves to discover. She made a very impactful statement by saying that in coming days boundaries are going to disappear in science and the internet is a boon of science. There is no separate arena in science since now most subjects have come together into  making it a holistic study ,thereby contemplating as to how we can bring about a change in ourselves, society, nation and the whole world inspired by innovation. The Pro VC concluded on a very strong note- "make a change and be successful in whatever you do".

In the Opening Remarks, Prof. (Dr.) P.B. Sharma, Vice Chancellor Amity University Gurgaon addressed the little brains to unearth the future of our nation. Firstly, he emphasized on "think of science as a career". Science can induce change to us, our society, nation and humanity, he added. Science can give us tremendous amount of credibility and position to communicate and transact business. Science is making important influence on our lives due to modernization and industrialization. According to him, science alone is not enough, we need to develop sensitivity towards environment, our society and future. As students of science, we all are supposed to think about what all improvements we can make as a human being for coming generations, he added. He stressed upon inspiring ourselves towards working out on the solutions to all the queries and problems which come to our mind. Hence, he ended his speech saying that finding out solutions to any problem is research. Therefore, he advised the students to stay fearless, motivated and equipped for a brighter tomorrow.

Followed by the Vice Chancellor's address to the students, Dr K L Chopra, former Director IIT Kharagpur , founder of Thin Film Laboratory, IIT Delhi and Micro science Laboratory , IIT Kharagpur discussed about why physics is the most advanced branch of science, how it can provide us with the answers to every phenomenon. He also talked about the quantum theory, the lotus effect, the evolution of atoms and molecules, surface engineering and the crystal system. He mentioned that he finds atoms very funny yet very intelligent an example of this is the diamond structure wherein atoms are placed at a very specific angle. He further enlightened the audience about nano particles as to how USA used it as a bio weapon during the war. He concluded his part of the session by making it interactive wherein the students were free to ask questions and clear their doubts.

Thereafter, Mrs. Arti Chopra, Principal of Amity International School, expressed her delight at the level of the questions raised by the students. How students need to be given the power and freedom to think and get away with the fear, she added. She emphasized on the fact that education is not just simple, half knowledge. It is knowledge which needs to be created and recreated, learnt and relearned. She concluded by showing a video portraying research oriented students in Amity International School.

Prof. Vijay K Chaudhary, Department of Biochemistry & Chairman Interim Governing Council WUS Health Centre ( IGC-WUSHC), University Of Delhi took a session on how science has been a blessing to mankind and talked about the implementations of the modern technology in the health sector and pollution control. He quoted that "If you are exposed to good people, you ought to be inspired". He also discussed about the NEVA HIV test and the Crystal TB test - that have been invented by his students under his guidance. He brought his session to an end by giving out a very positive message about a basic principle for young minds to follow. It is the discovery of unknown which gives elation, satisfaction and energy to do more for the development of the healthy environment for all. 

This was followed by the presentation of mementos to the guests. The Vice Chancellor, AUG and Pro-Vice Chancellor, AUG felicitates Prof Vijay K Chaudhary and Dr. K L Chopra with a shawl and a sapling.

The Inaugural session of the internship program ended with vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Vikas Madhukar, Director Admissions & Deputy Director, Amity Business School, AUG. He thanked all dignitaries for visiting in Inspire Internship Program at Amity University Gurgaon and addressed the students to utilize this blessed opportunity of such an inspirational program to make an ideal choice for science.

The second half of Day 1 -“INSPIRE” started with a “Career Guidance session by Dr Padmakali Banerjee, Pro- Vice Chancellor, and AUG. Followed by a “Psychometric Assessment” which was conducted for the student’s ‘Self Realization After 45 minutes of assessment, she made them understand as to how knowing personal strengths and weaknesses are  important while choosing a career for yourself. She explained the significance of self realization before taking any decision for a career or a job to be committed to the same.

After the dynamic session of Prof. (Dr.) Padmakali Banerjee, Dr Monika Kaul, Associate Professor, Department of Botany, Hans Raj College, University of Delhi took a session on ‘Urban Forests: Their Role in Pollution Abatement Using Novel Perspective’. Dr Kaul highlighted the importance of big trees which provide big canopies and how increasingly forest land (green space) is shrinking due to an increase in concrete forests. She concluded the session by stating how vital it is to have the knowledge of which plant is appropriate to which type of soil in order to develop a sapling to become a fully grown healthy tree. She discussed about the impact of technology on modern farming and agriculture. She also talked about the capabilities of different trees for healthy environment.

Day 2: 25th November 2015

The Excitement of second day of INSPIRE started with a session on ‘Aptitude for Science’ conducted by Dr KK Arora, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, University of Delhi. Dr Arora’s session highlighted the contribution of Science in giving impetus to global development. He spokes about the importance of developing aptitude for scientific learning from a very young age. The eminent scientist shared some interesting stories behind various significant discoveries like Penicillin, x-rays and aspirin which revolutionized the medical world. Dr Arora advised the young participants from various schools of Delhi and NCR to observe keenly and think logically to inculcate scientific thinking. “Discoveries happen not because of sheer luck but creative insights of the researcher”, he concluded. Dr Arora ended his presentation with some interesting demonstrations. He also answered questions posed by the students. Dr Arora was then felicitated by Prof (Dr) PB Sharma, Honorable Vice Chancellor, AUG.

The next session was scheduled on ‘Molecular Genetics’ and was conducted by Prof Ali Sher, Professor, Centre for Interdisciplinary Research, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Prof Ali commenced his session with discussing an excerpt from one of the chapters of The Holy Bible which lays emphasis on genesis. He highlighted the human genome project and also showed the protein quality project. Later, Prof Ali explained various types of cancer. There was one quote which touched many nerves when he said - 'Change in life has created more trouble.' He focused on the adverse effects of overuse of cell phones and the harmful radiations emitted by them. Prof Ali concluded the session giving a word of advice to the participants.  “Nature has many surprises for you. You just need to go out there and explore.” The session was followed by question and answer round. Thereafter Major Gen. Bal, Dean, Students Welfare, AUG felicitated Prof Ali Sher with a memento.

The Second Half of the session was planned for a science aptitude test which was conducted for the students by the Amity School of Applied Sciences. The aim of the test was to find the strengths and weaknesses of the students in science subjects. The proceedings of the day culminated with practical display and hands-on experience in the various labs of Amity University Gurgaon.

After the lunch break, the INSPIRE participants were taken to various labs of Amity University Gurgaon for ‘Demonstrations, Experiments & Hands-on’. All Participants from different schools went for lab demonstration session. The students were divided into five groups and were taken to separate labs accordingly where faculty members of respective departments gave demonstration.

They were taken for visit to the following five labs:

3. Biochemistry

4. Forensic Science

5. Biotechnology

Day 3: 26 November, 2015

The third day of INSPIRE started with the inspiring statement “2050- Medication will make people live longer” in the session “Miracles of Interdisciplinary Research in Health” conducted by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Director, Amity Institute of Biotechnology, Amity University Gurgaon. Dr. Prasad spoke on the structure of DNA which is the molecule of life. Information on DNA is changing prevention treatment and diagnosis. He explained about the behavior of a person’s genes does not just depend on the gene’s DNA sequence but it is also effected by Epigenetic which is Genetics relating to the control of changes in gene function that do not involve changes in DNA sequences. He elaborated the importance of genome research saying that the sequencing of DNA will be cheaper which will help to produce human genome in 15 minutes. This will help get rid of genetic diseases and other dangerous diseases like cancer also. He said future Identity Cards will include the sequence of human genome. Genoscope will be the future Horoscope and Genome sequencing report might cast a shadow on the future relationships he added. There might be the possibility of creating artificial life which is called Synthetic Biology. He talked about Electrified Plants where scientists just change the color of rose, there might be chances of telling cells what to do, brain machine interfaces might start to get a grip, might be a construction of synthetic brain etc. Students gave a big round of applause in appreciation of his mindboggling presentation and lecture.

Next was Plenary Session in which Eminent Scientists and Professor took the stage. Dr .J. P. Dudeja, Director, Amity Institute of Laser Technology as the session moderator invited Prof. Dr. S. M. P. Khurana, Amity Institute of Biotechnology, Maj. Gen. V K Narang, Director, Amity School of Engineering & Technology and pass out from IIT Kharagpur, Dr R K Thakur, Dy Director , Amity School of Applied Sciences and PhD from Germany, Prof Dr Kushagra, Program Coordinator, Amity School of Environmental Sciences. To start the session, Dr Khurana enlightens the students with his immense knowledge. He is a well known botanist & has travelled most part of the world for his research on potato. He is a recipient of Sir J C Bose Medal Award, awarded by then Prime Minister, Dr Manmonhan Singh. During his session Dr Khurana asked a question which seemed to caught the attention. 'Is science important for mankind?' he asked. Dr Khurana told the students about Einstein as in how he became one of the most prominent scientists of all time. Dr Khurana winded up his speech by quoting 'If you have a decent aptitude & the correct attitude, you'll succeed'.

Post this; Maj Gen V K Narang gave presentation on Career aspects of Engineering. He recalled his old days where his generations were not having the luxury of phones & internet but always remain excited for new inspiration and innovation. He cited - 'Engineers are changing the world all the time.' He also gave some success tips which will come handy while giving the tough entrance exams. Later on, he showed a video named 'Why Choose Engineering?'

After an enthusiastic session by Maj. Gen. Narang, Dr. R. K. Thakur, Deputy Director, Amity School of Applied Sciences conducted the session. Dr. Thakur recalled the various experiences that he had while working as a professor in a German University. He addressed the students about the exciting times one will have if he/she opts for engineering and then said - 'One should choose engineering only when he thinks he's dedicated enough & can give his 100%.'

Then, Dr. Kushagra Rajendra, Faculty and Coordinator, Amity School of Earth and Environmental Sciences discussed & gave breathtaking insights & his personal stance on technology. He did his PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Dr Rajendra gave the example of Issac Asimov & told the students to read his books. One of the highlights of Dr Rajendra's speech was when he said - 'Global Warming is a huge environmental threat & it is happening due to the technology created by humans themselves.' Dr Rajendra discussed about urbanization & various pollutions. He finally concluded with a quote- 'Technology can solve most of the problems only if it's applied in a holistic manner.'

Later on, all the prestigious speakers were felicitated with mementos by Mr. Sachin Juneja, Director, Market & Promotion, Amity University Gurgaon and Dr. Vikas Madhukar, Dy Director, Amity Business School, Director – Admission, Amity University Gurgaon.

Post Lunch Session, Much Awaited Workshop on Astronomy and Space Science workshop started with a technical knowhow session on How to build Rocket and Launch it with common utensils used in our Kitchen and a pressure machine. Initially there were detailed on the origin and history of rocketry and how does a rocket fly?  The speaker explained about the Newton’s 3rd law of motion. Miniature rockets made of plastic bottles and paper cones were given to groups of students and were provided materials for the designated experiment and with their combined efforts they launched the “ROCKETS”. The session left an indelible mark on the young impressionistic minds. They gain an experience on Rocket Launch. At the end, they measured their weight on various machines installed to see their weight on different planets like mars, Neptune, Venus. So, the day was full of fun with learning along with a lot of practical knowledge to take back and triggered the students to think Out of the Box

Day 4: 27th November 2015

This day was dedicated to Sessions on two major topics that was “Nano technology” and “Biological Sciences”. The session started with the introduction of Dr. Brijesh Kumar, A Doctorate from IIT Delhi and heads, Center for Nano Science and Technology at Amity University Gurgaon explained to the students about the structure of atoms and molecules and how nanotechnology controls the matter on atomic and molecular scale. He also explained that nanotechnology deals with structures sized between 1 to 100 nanometers .He threw light on various current topics where he talked about how present computer technology can be replaced with advance quantam computer technology. He further explained the uses of Nano Robots in medical treatment and the uses of Nano sensors in National Security. He also discussed about Nano generators which according to him will be very promising for energy harvesting. He also showed a small clip on how energy is harvested from Nano generators. The session ended with students asking interesting questions regarding generation of energy by blinking an eye to lighting a bulb. Some students enquired regarding the cost of generating Nano generators In India. The session ended with Dr. Alisha Gupta, Coordinator of Blue Bells School, Gurgaon facilitating Dr Brijesh Kumar.

Post the session, Principal Amity International School, Dr Anshu Arora gave a inspiring speech on Science and Innovation and how Students should pursue research in science. She praised the program initiative taken by DST, Government of India.

Participants also visited Innovation Gallery where they saw inspiring research and innovative projects made by Students of Amity University Gurgaon. The Visit was hosted by Amity School of Engineering & Technology, AUG. During an Interaction with Students at Innovation Gallery,  Maj. Gen. Narang, Director, ASET asked the students to be excited enough while dealing with products to think out of the box.

After a short break, Professer Arun Jagannath from Department of Botany, Delhi University took the stage to deliver his lecture on “Biological sciences”. He started his session with a very basic question on the difference between science and technology. He clarified that technology and science have a common denominator which is the “natural world”. He spoke about the initial paradigms in biology, chicken and egg theory, current perspective on biology and biotechnology , agrobacterium tumifaciens and its uses , gene silencing, and   RNA technology. He also gave a very brief introduction on transgenic plants, bio safety, tumors in plants in which he explained how tumor causing plants can be used for beneficial purposes with the use of biotechnology. He also address the audience on bioinformatics, which is the process of formation of proteins.. He also threw light on another aspect of biology, that is agriculture in which he talked about human immigration in Africa, development of hybrid corn which led to the big increase in yields in US. The session ended with an interesting question from the audience wherein a student enquired that as  pathogens infect us , can anything  infect pathogens . Dr Jagannath was felicitated by Ms. Poonam Yadav, program coordinator from Suncity World School.

Post Lunch session, a quiz competition on Science was organized in which all schools participated. The students did well by replying to the questions that were based on the current topics. The first prize was won by won by Suncity world school and Runners up Team was from D H Lawrence School. Winners were felicitated by awarding prizes. Overall it was an enthralling experience for all present.

Day 5: 28th November 2015

The Final Day of “INSPIRE” started with a session by Maj. Gen. G. S. Bal, Dean Student Welfare and Director Hostel & Security, Amity University Gurgaon. Maj. Gen Bal spoke on "Application of Science & Technology in the Armed Forces". He commenced his session by making them understand the importance of the topic .He stated that large No of technologies had been evolved to fight wars and protect nations. These technologies were then later applied for usage for peaceful purposes.   There has been a revolutionary change in war fighting after the discovery of gunpowder. The discovery of atomic energy  and the atomic bomb further changed the geo strategic nature of wars and  their resultant impact on geopolitics. Before 1100 AD, with basic weaponry, “clash of steel against steel"- the outcome of war was mostly dependent on personal strength, skills and leadership qualities. He drew a contrasting scenario between wars of yester years and modern day warfare, where nuclear weapons and state-of-art technologies now impact on how wars are conducted.

He stated - "Battlefield is getting more and more remote and technology extensive". The development of tanks in World War- I ,was a response to the stalemate that trench warfare had created. He further went on to explain the application of Radars, Sonar, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Military application of robots and  Network centric systems. He mentioned various examples of war time and peaceful applications of modern technologies.  He further enlightened the audience by talking about Siachen Glacier; the highest battlefield in the world and how science and technology has helped our soldiers to sustain themselves, in such harsh conditions. The popularity of the lecture could be gauged by the question and answer session that ensued.

Next Session was on “Mathematics and fun” which was taken by Dr. C. K. Goel, Professor of Mathematics, Amity University, Noida, The session started with a quote - "Mathematics is what you see, you think, and you practice". The session was made a fun learning experience for the audience by the various games such as 'guessing a number', 'fun with calendars' and 'know your age by different tables'. These games used basic mathematics and it can be seen by considering the example of the calendar game- the first step is to pick a month from the calendar and choose 9 numbers that form a square. The 9 numbers are added and divided by the middle term. The answer would always be number 9. During the session he talked on various interesting mathematical concepts such as Pythagorean triplets, Ramanujan's Magic Square, Classical Geometry problems and so on. With the example of an imaginary number i and its properties, he showed the audience the concept of complex and real numbers as i to the power i is not an imaginary number but a real number (it value approximately 0.20788). The session was concluded with a talk on modern mathematics.

Next Half of the session resumed with the Valediction ceremony. The students and dignitaries were addressed by the chief guest, Dr. Pradeep Srivastava, Sr. Principal Scientist/Dy. Director at Central Drug Research Institute, Luck told students that he delivered his first talk in 1988 and today was his 1033rd lecture at Amity University Gurgaon. The title of his presentation was “Warning 71: Are we ready to face it?” He talked about Crocin, a widely used medicine in India, was first brought here in India by his Institute. He propounded the use of cartoons as an innovative teaching methodology. The medium of cartoons was an easily comprehendible and a fun way of learning.

Dr. Pradeep Srivastava stated in Sciencetoons presentations on science where slides included text in one part and a related cartoon in the other part. He gave presentations on Parasitological and Brownian Movement. In 1989, Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences which awards Nobel Prizes, accepted the concept of “Sciencetoons”. Then he also told about “Sciencetoonics”, which is a new branch of science that deals with effective science communication using a novel class of Sciencetoon and this was highly applauded by the people. He then proceeded on to display Sciencetoons on greenhouse effect, biodiversity, save tiger, air pollution, greenhouse gases and oxygen parlor. He quoted “Nature says, if you save me, I will save you”. Later on, he demonstrated the effects on nature due to our carelessness using Sciencetoons. He then concluded his lecture with “Never give up and you will be a winner!” In 1989, Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences which awards Nobel Prizes, accepted the concept of “Sciencetoons”. Followed by this, Honorable Vice Chancellor, Dr. P. B. Sharma, Amity University Gurgaon, spokes on conservation of energy. He stressed on inspiring research that should be undertaken to develop scientific technologies to overcome the survival challenges surrounding us. He emphasized that one should acquire knowledge of science for the benefit of mankind and nature. The departure from hydrocarbons and the extensive use of hydrogen can increase the span of human life on earth. Dr. P. B. Sharma enlightened the budding scientists with new ideas for finding  cost effective mechanisms ,which can help in conserving  energy .The use of battery operated cars in metropolitan cities to combat pollution; use of solar power in place of electricity, are some initiatives in this direction . He further talked about the need of innovative research in the field of human health. He concluded his speech saying “only the public will and determination can pay homage to nature.”

The chief guest, Dr. Pradeep Srivastava was then felicitated by the Honorable Vice Chancellor, Dr. P. B. Sharma, AUG with a sapling. Major Gen G. S. Bal presented a  vote of thanks to the dignitaries and acknowledged the efforts made by the  organizing and marketing team in making the event a success. He briefly touched upon the  history of the event “INSPIRE” which was introduced four years back at AUG ,during  2011. Thanking the Department of Science & Technology (DST), the sponsor of the event, Gen Bal intimated students present that the DST was running  programmes which are SEATS, SHE and AORC ,to inspire and facilitate students to take up science as a career. Research and innovations in Science and Technology must focus towards benefiting humanity and improving quality of life. He cited examples of few inspiring innovations such as Jaipur Foot, innovated  by Dr. Sethi for 500,000 people available at a relatively low price  , 3000 km of roads which has been made by plastic waste in South India and  a new concept of establishing water ATMs catering to the needs of the local population. He finally thanked all Schools for participating in the 5th Inspire Internship Program held at AUG.

The event came to the end after Mr. Sachin Juneja, Director, Market Promotion and Prof Dr. Vikas Madhukar, Director Admissions, Deputy Director, Amity Business School, AUG and showed gratitude to everyone who contributed in making this five day “INSPIRE” programme a success. The day justified the time students spent attending it and inspired all for science and innovation. While the students were leaving, they were all gifted with Amity backpacks as souvenirs.
