LAW DAY DIALOGUE REMINDS STUDENTS OF SIGNIFICANCE OF  LAW DAY

 

To coincide with the Indian Law Day celebrations and  to honor the 207 eminent members of the Constituent Assembly, who are considered the founding fathers of the Constitution of India, Amity Law School(ALS), a constituent of Amity University Gurgaon organized a Debate Competition, Constitutional Quiz and Poster Making Competition at Seminar Hall Block A , on 26 November 2015.

 The Celebrations began with the traditional lighting of lamp by Prof. Dr. P.B Sharma, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor along with Maj Gen BS Suhag (Retd), the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Maj Gen GS Bal (Retd), the DSW, Maj. Gen P.K Sharma (Retd), Director ALS and other dignitaries present.

Maj. Gen P.K Sharma (Retd), Director ALS, welcoming the guests, in his address, highlighted the significance of Law Day. He mentioned that National law day offers us an opportunity to celebrate the power of democracy, idea of justice and examine where we stand in the fieldlegal education. He said that the aim of education in Amity Law School is not only to be good lawyers but also good human beings. The gist of his Address is annexed to this Report) .This was followed by paying of floral welcome to Hon’ble Vice Chancellor &  Deputy Vice Chancellor.

 Prof (Dr) P.B Sharma,Hon’ble Vice Chancellor,recalled the history of making of the Constitution and left the audience spellbound with his excellent oratory. He emphasized on the renewed importance of honesty and dedication toservice where the legal fraternity has come under fire for various controversies. He recalled that in his younger days the judiciary stayed aloof from social and political interactions and were reverred. However with the passage of time, inter-mingling and interacting with the public, allegations of corruption against judiciary are being leveled. He called upon the students,as lawyers of tomorrow,to be guided in their actions by reason and logic, not merely in their legal career but in life as well. Following his thought-provoking concluding remarks, he administered the Law Day Oath to the  Amity Law Students "to rededicate themselves to the following cardinal principles which formed the solid foundation on which this grand constitutional edifice is erected: (i) the rule of law, (ii) independence of the Judiciary and (iii) the independence of legal profession". Consequent to the thought provoking message of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor the Debate Competition on the topic-“ National Judicial Appointment Commission: A step ahead to Curtail Independence of Judiciary", commenced. Atotal of 11 Participants displayed their oratory skills. Nishant Khosala, who spoke against the motion and Mayank Shekhar who spoke for the motion were declared Winner and Runner-Up respectively. The highlight of the debate was the rebuttal round where the Judges asked each speaker questions. Each participant rose to the occasion to defend his/her argument.

There were a large number of entries for the Poster Making Competition ,best among them were affixed on walls of Seminar Hall .The dignitaries were amazed with the  artistic proclivity  of the  Law students. The artistically made ‘Goddess Themis’ by Vatika Bansal stole the lime light and was adjudged the best entry along with the Poster on Domestic Violence made by team comprising Smriti and Aruna. Neha and Damini's Poster on Save Girl Child was declared Ist Runner Up. The team of Harshal Handa and Ayush Goyal who highlighted ills of Rape in their Poster stood 2nd Runners Up.

The Final event of the day, ”Constitutional Quiz” echoed the spirit of Constitution through audio- visual rounds of quiz which thrilled the students. The Final Round was  hotly contested byfive teams.In a close contest , the team of Mayank Shekhar, Jojogandha Ray and Deepanshu got away with the Winners trophy. Runner Up Team were comprised of Manisha Shahi, Taruna Dabas and Sonali Bedi.

Drawing down the curtain, Ms. Nidhi Sharma, Convener of the event, while profusely thanking the dignitaries for gracing the occasion, conveyed her gratitude to all those who made this Programme a success. A gist of the sameis annexed to this Report.
