‘Integrated Science and Interdisciplinary Engineering and its Impact on Technologies for Health, Energy, and Environment’

The brainstorming workshop was organized to create awareness and to pursue the mission for integrative science and interdisciplinary engineering for education and research to solve the persistent needs of the society in areas of global energy security, environmental sustainability and health. Science and Engineering are interdisciplinary and requires a trans-departmental approach. A perfect example of integration of science and engineering is the brain. It is essential for a healthy and disease-free human society to practice interdisciplinary science and trans-departmental engineering. The remarkable growth of higher education in our nation associates with poor quality of education and employability, and frail system of research in colleges and universities. Thus, to ensure growth of quality research of high societal relevance, it is essential to create research network and innovation clusters comprising of multi-disciplinary researchers. The workshop was first of its kind that focused on the integration of science and engineering for health, energy, and environment, at Amity University, held on June 05, 2015. The deliberation of the day focused on the following  key areas/issues which was followed by a panel discussion:

§  Research: The power of knowledge

§  Brain research as an example of integration of sciences

§  Photonics for society

§  Water as basis of integrating science

The event was graced by the presence of Honorable Chancellor Sh. Aseem Chauhan and by distinguished Indian Scientists and Academicians, Honorable Vice Chancellor AUH Prof. P. B. Sharma, Pro Vice Chancellor AUH Prof. Padmakali Banerjee and Prof. Rajendra Prasad, Director AIB and AIISH. The distinguished invited speakers who delivered their keynote talks were Prof. K. L Chopra (Emeritus Professor, IIT Delhi and Ex-Director IIT Kharagpur), Prof. S. Sinha (Director, National Brain Research Centre, Manesar), Prof. Anurag Sharma, (Eminent Physicist  IIT Delhi), Prof. V. Rajamani (Emeritus Prof., JNU).

Vice Chancellor Prof. P. B. Sharma in his inspiring welcome address said that AUG feels highly privileged to organise this important workshop on 5th June, the World Environment Day at our University. This day holds an important agenda as we celebrate the World Environment day with the consciousness “Seven billion Dreams, one Planet, Consume with Care”.  The Keynote address by Prof. K. L Chopra on “Knowledge power of research” emphasized on creation of multidisciplinary knowledge through integrated research, innovations through convergence and integration of translational and transformational research for the creation of wealth through IPR and entrepreneurship. Prof. S. Sinha focused on brain research as an example of integration of sciences and stressed upon biomarkers of brain diseases, brain-machine interface, and presented the highlights of the brain research at his institution.  Prof. Anurag Sharma delivered an interesting talk on ”Photonics for Society” and highlighted the varied applications of light in our day-to-day life. The talk on water as basis of integrating science by Prof. V. Rajamani was presented with a very strong message on the value of water for life and sustainability of our earth.

A Panel discussion was also organized in this even which included Honorable Chancellor Sh. Aseem Chauhan along with the faculty members, invited distinguished eminent scientists, Vice Chancellor Prof. P.B. Sharma, Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Padmakali Banerjeee, Dr. A.K. Nagpal (Chairman, Board of Governors, Amity School of Medicine), Prof. R. Prasad. The panelist discussed in depth some of the key issues of air, water, and energy. The panel discussion was moderated by Prof K L Chopra and touched upon water policies, public policies, education systems, credit based integrative courses, interdisciplinary research projects, and integrated faculty groups to promote integrative teaching and research at Amity University. After a very intense discussion, several key suggestions were unanimously agreed upon which shall serve the framework for quality improvement and bringing Amity University to the forefront of education and research globally.
