A one day National Seminar on “Emerging Trends in Sustainable Urban Development” was organized by the Amity School of Architecture & Planning, Amity University Madhya Pradesh on 28th Feb 2017. The Chief Guest of the inaugural session of the seminar were Prof. (Dr.) Manmohan Kapshe (MANIT , Bhopal ). The present were Prof. (Dr.) Mayank Mathur (SPA, Delhi), Dr. S. P. Bansal (Commissioner, Plg. DDA), Lt Gen V.K. Sharma, AVSM (Retd.), Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of AUMP, Prof. Y. P. Singh HOD of ASAP department along with all the HOIs & HODs of the University.
In his the opening remarks Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Lt Gen V K Sharma focused on various opportunities, challenges & importance of Sustainability in Architecture and Urban Planning. The keynote speaker Prof. (Dr.) Manmohan Kapshe through his presentation expressed his views on sustainable urban development in architecture in detail and how it can contribute to the Modern world and through his presentation, he described its significance of sustainable architecture, techniques implemented in Urban Planning in India, and also threw light on the various short comings in the existing planning methodologies, etc.
Prof.(Dr.) Manmohan Kapshe’s speech was followed by talk of Prof. (Dr.) Mayank Mathur who emphasised upon sustainable design in architecture and how it affects us. He described sustainability as, "Any construction which could satiate the needs of the present generation, without hampering or over exploiting the natural resources belonging to the future generation".
Dr. S.P. Bansal (Commissioner, Plg. DDA) enlightened the audience on “Sustainable Urban development- Thrust on basic Infrastructure and Urban Poor”. He explained the relevance of basic Infrastructure for sustainable urban development and also expressed his concern in helping and promoting design & research work for the poor.
The proceedings of the seminar were released during the Inauguration Ceremony. The books consists of 47 paper abstracts and 39 full papers have been selected for publication.
The papers were selected after peer review process out of one hundred papers received from various scholars/researchers.
Dr. Sandeep Sankat (Associate Professor at School of Planning &Architecture, Bhopal) was the chief guest at the Valedictory Function. His presentation included videos that emphasised on Universal Design and Barrier Free Design. He also shared his views on the responsibilities of an architect and his primary commitment towards Barrier Free Design that makes infrastructure accessible to all, including to the differently a bled citizens.
Three technical sessions were held during the seminar, each session had one guest speaker along with one ASAP faculty member to judge the papers. Paper presentation was followed by an effective discussion with guest speakers.
All participants were awarded with certificates and mementos by Lt Gen V. K. Sharma, AVSM (Retd.), Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of AUMP, Gwalior. At the end, Prof. Y. P. Singh, Director – Amity School of Architecture & Planning, expressed his hearty congratulations to all the participants,and also his gratitude to all the organizers of the event for the successful completion of the program.
