CRIMEAN: CRIMINAL LAW CONCLAVE

Criminal Law Conclave Organized at Amity University

As the country has witnessed major paradigm shifts in various domains of criminal law in the recent times, Amity Law School, Noida organized the 3rd edition of “CRIMEAN: CRIMINAL LAW CONCLAVE” to foster intellectual curiosity among young minds about the ever-evolving nature of crime and criminal law.

Smt. Swati Singh, Hon'ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Woman welfare NRI, Flood Control, Agriculture export, Agriculture Marketing, Agriculture Foreign Trade and state minister in the Ministry of Women Welfare, Family Welfare, Maternity and Child Welfare in the Government of Uttar Pradesh asked the gathering to bring about a change in their thoughts and perceptions to bring a change in the society. “While there were discussions on gender neutrality here today, I am forced to think how gender discrimination begins at home right from the birth of the child by allocating specific colors and toys to the babies being born. These discriminations grow with this thought and I strongly believe that our thoughts should be gender neutral,” shared the minister. She also emphasized that unless people change their perceptions, laws and acts won’t bring about a change or be effective.

Hon’ble Mr. Justice Brijesh Kumar (Former Justice, Supreme Court of India) congratulated Amity University for not only discussing issues and problems of the society but also looking to find solutions for them through the competition. “I would urge you all to share the deliberations of the conclave to bring about necessary amendments,” said former Justice Brijesh Kumar.

Prof. (Dr.) N.K. Sinha Vice Chancellor, Himalayan Garhwal University shared how such conclaves provide a lively environment to students to learn about law at Amity University. “The field of law has become extremely interesting as criminals have become active and have been challenging us. The government is giving us ample opportunities to be active and productive in the areas we have chosen. The faith in the legal profession must be there,” shared Professor Sinha.

The Conclave provided a unique platform to law students all over the country to exhibit and cultivate their interests in criminal law by participating in diverse kinds of competitions like Legal Quiz; Debate; Legislative Drafting and Essay Writing with students from Delhi University and Amity Law School, Noida bagging the top spots in the competitions. These events focused on some of the most important contemporary issues related to the functioning of the criminal justice system in India looking to contribute to the positive development of criminal law regime. In addition a ‘Panel Discussion’ on “Indian perspective on Cyber Crimes” was also organized.

Crimean 2019 has a successful story even before moving towards becoming one of the flagship events of Amity Law School, Noida. Initially, Crimean started as an intra-level criminal law quiz competition and this year, it moved up a notch by declaring a Criminal Law Conclave with 5 events (4 competitive + 1 non-competitive competition). The conclave hosted more than 400 participants from various prestigious law schools across the nation.
