Increasing Green Cover will Enhance Employability avers Foresters during a Workshop Organized at Amity University
Employment generation and promoting afforestation, especially of industrial wood, Production Forestry and Livelihood Issues are some of the core themes put forth for deliberations during the inauguration of the two-day training workshop organized by Amity School of Natural Resources & Sustainable Development. Sponsored by Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India, the workshop on “Contribution of Forests Plantation in Livelihood Support and Industrial Production” is being attended by over 25 IFS officers from all across the country.
The workshop assumes even more significance as the State Governments have been recently mandated by the Central Government to enhance forestry activities to further achieve the objectives of the Nationally-Determined Contributions (NDCs), which are to increase its forest and tree cover. This growth will help in an additional carbon sink equivalent to 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide by the year 2030.
Chief Guest for the occasion, Mr. D.K. Sinha, IFS, Inspector General of Forests, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change welcomed the amalgamation of delegates from all across the country to deliberate and participate in a focused environment. Mr Sinha pointed at the need to increase the wood production that has seen a decline in the last few years. “More wood needs to be grown on farm lands for industrial usage and also to generate employment. I am hopeful that the two-day deliberations will result in comprehensive recommendations that Amity University will be able to share with the Ministry to promote forestry activities and boost afforestation across the nation,” shared Mr Sinha.
Mr. Ishwar Singh, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, NCT Delhi encouraged the officers present to hold high self-esteem and suggested the need to improve the quality of services being offered by the IFS officials. “Going beyond the routine forestry work and doing something innovative will be your achievement that will make you stand apart,” shared Mr Singh.
Dr. Balvinder Shukla, Vice Chancellor, AUUP shared how increasing emphasis is being put on plantation of trees the workshop will have two-way communication to come up with effective strategies to increase the forest cover. “Amity University has been consistently focusing upon creating awareness amongst our students to respect, protect and create a sustainable environment and making them understand the value of natural resources,” said Dr Shukla.
Discussions were also held around Agroforestry: A Tool for Livelihood Support through Industrial Production, Industrial Plantation on Degraded Forests: Ecological, Economic and Livelihood Issues and other industrial experiences. Also present on the occasion were Prof. B.K.P. Sinha, Advisor, ASNRSD, Prof. Rajive Kumar, Vice President, Amity Foundation of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Lucknow and Dr. S.P. Singh, IFS (Retd.), Director, ASNRSD, AUUP among others.
