As part of International Lecture Series, Professor Andrew Griffiths- Executive Dean of University of Queensland’s Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, Australia delivered a lecture on “Sustainability in Business - How can Business Leaders navigate the Social, Environmental and Economic Challenges of Climate Change?” at Amity University Sector 125 Noida.
Delivering the lecture, Professor Andrew Griffiths briefed about various aspects of practical sustainability, in respect to adaptation and resilience to weather extremes. He pointed out that the challenges associated with extreme weather conditions are required to be reviewed from business perspective as well, since they impact various industries and organizations. He highlighted that the industry sectors located in climate-sensitive areas, dependent on climate-sensitive inputs or with long-lived capital assets are highly affected. Therefore, businesses need to be sensitize about the issues.
Outlining the dilemma which businesses face, Prof. Griffiths stated “If we continue to do businesses as we are doing it today, using the resources in similar manner, then in coming years the global temperature is likely to rise about 4 degrees. Thereby, causing an unfavorable change in the climatic condition of the world.”. He exclaimed that there is very short window of opportunity to have a collective intervention now by decarbonizing the economy, so that in the next twenty years, the temperature rise could be controlled to 1-1.5 degrees.
Prof. Griffiths averred that the need of the hour is to maintain sustainable development by following the triple bottom line i.e ecological, economic and social sustainability. He called upon the budding business professionals, leaders and educators to come up with new innovative ideas along with agile and efficient mindset. He suggested that by adapting to new business models for sustainable growth such as the notion of organizational slack i.e not using the resources to full potential would enable businesses to survive and grow for long term.
Prof. Griffiths was accompanied by Prof. Janardan Kevin, Faculty of Business, Economics and Law and Mr. Sagar Bahadur, UQ representative in India.
The lecture was attended by the management students, faculty members and the academicians of the University.
