3 Day Hands-on Workshop on ‘CRISPR/Cas System for Genome Engineering’
Amity Food & Agriculture Foundation (AFAF) is organizing a 3 Day Hands-on Workshop on ‘CRISPR/Cas System for Genome Engineering’ from 3 to 5 July 2019 at Amity University, Noida Campus.
The Objective of the Workshop is to equip the Research Scholars and young Faculty Members in the application of CRISPR/Cas-mediated genome editing in plants. Hundreds of Scientists, Research Scholars, Doctors, Faculty members and Students from various Universities across India are participating in the workshop.
Dr. Nutan Kaushik, Director General, AFAF welcomed the participants from across the country. Dr. Kaushik promulgated that the agenda of the workshop is to help researchers to learn the technique and application of genome editing using CRISPR/CAS method. Talking about CRISPR/CAS technique she said that this method of genome editing can bring a revolutionary change in the area of life sciences. She advised the participants to make full use of the workshop by interacting with the lecturers and raising questions.
Dr. W. Selvamurthy, President, Amity Scientific, Technical and Innovation Foundation (ASTIF) lauded the diversity of the congregation and remarked that through synergetic and collaborative approach one can achieve better and encouraging results. Addressing the participants, he said that these workshops are conducting to provide guidance whereas innovation and improvisation has to be done by the individual. He suggested that Amity can have collaborative projects and joint workshops with other universities and try to build a connect and synergy through which we can achieve optimum results.
Dr. Vibha Srivastava, Professor and Indo-US GET in Visiting Fellow, Univ. of Arkansas, USA discussed in detail about the background and history of Genome Editing. She apprised that gene editing is an established technique, easy to use through which we can revolutionize the domain of life sciences. CRISPR/CAS9 is the most famous reagent used for gene and genome editing. She explained that how the CRISP/CAS system was an amalgamation of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. However, before using it we need to know the system on which we are going to apply it. She apprised that the genome editing process has a wide variety of applications including basic biological research, development of biotechnology products and treatment of diseases.
During the event, Dr. Srivastava was conferred with the Honorary Professorship of Amity University, which she accepted with sheer warmth and enthusiasm and expressed her delight over being associated with Amity University. “I consider this award as a gesture of long-term relationship with Amity and I look forward to work with Amity and make some vital contributions” she remarked.
She said that her university, The University of Arkansas and Amity University share a common vision i.e. To Achieve Academic Excellence. This common vision would further strengthen the bond between both the Universities.
The 3-day workshop would witness several sessions such as ‘Application of CRISPR-CAS Technology for Plant Virus Management’, ‘Genetically Modified Plants’, ‘Regulatory Aspects of Genome Editing’, ‘Genome Editing in the Era of Personalized Medicines’ and many other issues will be addressed by eminent Professors and Scientists from India and abroad.
