“Consolidating SDGs to drive Socio-Economic Development”

Amity? ?School? ?of? ?Economics in association with ?Quality? ?Council? ?of? ?India? organized the 4th National? ?Conference on “Consolidating SDGs to drive Socio-Economic Development” at Amity? ?University,? ?Noida. The conference aims to generate widespread awareness about the various Sustainable Development goals and to encourage budding research scholars to understand intricacies of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and catalyze the development.

The conference witnessed eminent guests from diverse fields and the incorporation of their ideas about SDGs and other issues related to it, added to the knowledge of the students.

Sharing her views, Professor (Dr.) Shalini Singh Sharma, Director, Amity School of Economics said that SDGs or Sustainable Development means that it should touch every part of our lives. India is among the fastest growing economies is the world and we should make sure that we facilitate and encourage sustainable development in every aspect of life.

Inaugurating the conference, Mr. Saba Karim, General Manager, BCCI Cricket Operation apprised that contribution from every nation and each sector such as educational institutions, public & private firms and even, sports organizations are required to achieve the SDGs. “It is heartening that the agenda 2030 of the UN charter acknowledges the role sports can play in achieving the SDGs.” he mentions. He remarked it is important for sports organizations to understand that sports can be a powerful and cost-effective tool to imbibe values such as discipline, rule & regulations, diversity and furthermore, the difference of religion, caste and creed is diluted to promote sports. Mr. Karim pointed out that the health goal can also be achieved through sports since every sport promotes healthy eating lifestyle amongst the sportspersons. Talking about gender equality, he shared that young talent, both men and women, are encouraged for sports especially in cricket. “To promote inclusiveness in sports, BCCI has made a committee for physically challenged cricketers with three component including cricket for blind, physically disabled cricketers and thirdly for deaf and dumb.” he averred. He urged the famous sports personalities to use the global platform to promote the vision behind SDGs and help in achieving it.

Guest of Honor, Ms. Priti Srivastava, Sr. Vice President, Reliance India apprised that India contributes a major portion to the global economy therefore India’s steps towards sustainable development in the coming decade will matter a lot. She apprised that Niti Aayog has set some goals which we must accomplish by 2030 for sustainable development. She suggested 4 aspects which we need to look at to catalyze sustainable development – Identifying the gap, Collaboration and Capacity Building, Measuring Change and Merging at a National level.

Guest of honor, S.K Malhotra, Agriculture Commissioner, Govt. of India said that there are challenges in implementing policies concerning sustainable development because we do not have the availability of baseline data and hence we cannot measure the level of sustainable development done. He said that farmers will play a vital role in sustainable development therefore they must be provided with advanced technologies and better quality of seeds.

During the two-day conference 118 research papers were presented on various topics including Smart City Mission, Role of NGO in economic Development, Climate change, Tourism etc. by scholars and students from various institutions across the country.
