“Traditional Medicine – Modern approaches for affordable and accessible healthcare”
To illustrate the significance of traditional healthcare methods and primitive medicines, Amity Institute of Training and Development along with Amity Institute of Public Health organized a workshop, from for 4th to 8th of February, on Traditional Medicine – modern approaches for affordable and accessible healthcare at Amity University, Noida.
Around 25 research scholars, medical officers and practitioners of Ayurveda from different states like Himanchal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi amongst others are participating in the workshop. The workshop was inaugurated by several eminent personages including Dr. A. Arunachalum, Dr. Mitali Mujherjee, in the field of medical sciences
Dr. B.C Das, Dean, Faculty of Health and Allied Sciences, in his speech, shared the vision of the Founder President of Amity, Dr. Ashok K Chauhan and said that his vision had led to the development of Amity in the field of science and innovation. He exclaimed his concerns over the heavy influx and over-usage of the allopathic medicines and the declining state of traditional methods of medication.
Dr. A. Arunachalum, Principal Scientist and Assistant Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and also the Guest of Honor, by his presentation, candidly addressed the issue of unhealthy eating habits that are very subtly getting infused into our dietary routines of the common man. As an agriculture expert, he opined that every individual must have a sound knowledge about the nutritional values and quality of the organic products they buy. He expressed that the need of the hour is to link food security with nutritional security. “All of us must switch back to the traditional healthcare methods and prescriptions of our ‘dadi’s and nani’s’ which have been lost because of the culture of nuclear families.”
Dr. Mitali Mujherjee, Principal Scientist, Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, CSIR, New Delhi discussed with the participants the modern methods and approaches that one can use towards having a holistic and better health. She intricately described the reasons as to why we must switch to the traditional ways of Medicare.
Dr. Sandeep Shukla, Medical Officer in-charge, State Homeopathy Hospital, Unnao, a veteran in the field of Homeopathy, familiarized the participants with the miracles that homeopathy has done to prove its mettle in the field of medical sciences. He cautioned the audience that as we were looking to curb the infectious diseases, diseases related to lifestyle disorders have slowly crept into the lives of the individuals. He stated several reasons that are causing lifestyle disorders like stress, sleep, disappointment, addiction, work habits and environment. He emphasized that as we are moving towards the era of minimum medication therefore all of us must abide by the maxim - “Prevention is better than cure.”
Subsequently, Dr. S. Rajagopala Shrikrishna, Head, Pediatrics, All India Institute of Ayurveda, enlightened the participants on the benefits of Ayurveda. He stressed that Ayurveda is the ‘art and science of healthy living.’ According to him, Ayurveda uses healthy lifestyle practices for body, mind and spirit wherein abstract customs like meditation and prayers were also considered integral parts of holistic treatment. He also discussed about the fundamental principles of Pancha Bhuta and mitigation of body pains through Ashtanga yoga.
During the 5-day workshop various topics including integrating traditional and modern medicine for affordable health, body integrating science and philosophy, AYUSH for attaining Arogya Bharat, E- literacy, benefits of traditional medicines, role of physiotherapy in modernizing healthcare, yoga, wellness and nutrition would be discussed.
