Gujrat National Law University wins Indian National Qualifying Rounds of 59th Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition

“There is a need to revitalize Law courses and add an element of Human Psychology into them”, stresses Hon’ble Justice Mr. Rajiv Sahai Endlaw, High Court of Delhi during the valediction of Indian National Qualifying Rounds of 59th Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition
The Team from Gujrat National Law University won IndianNational Qualifying Rounds of 59th Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, jointly organized by Amity Law School (ALS), Noida and International Law Students Association(ILSA) from Feb 8-11, 2018 at University Campus, Noida.
The Runners up Trophy was lifted by the team from National Law Institute University, Bhopal. The other two teams which were selected along with the Winners and Runners-up to represent India in the finals of 59th Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition which will be conducted in April, 2018 at Washington DC include National Law School of India University, Bangalore and The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkatta.
The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is the oldest and largest International Moot Competition in the world. This year, 35 teams across India participated in India National Qualifying Rounds including National University of Study and Research in Law, Ranchi, The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, Bhopal Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab and others.
Addressing the gathering, Hon’ble Justice Mr. Rajiv Sahai Endlaw, High Court of Delhi stressed that very few students coming out of colleges know how to learn; if they are given a case law to research, they will do a wonderful job but if they are given a file to find a case law, they are not able to. He called upon the law faculty members to teach students how to learn and advised students to enroll in similar programmes offered for free online. Further sharing his views, he expressed that most of the students coming out of law colleges will join Law offices spending nights,doing mundane documentary work and in next 5-10 years, that work will be taken over by machines and there will not be enough space for these lakhs of lawyers in Courts. Suggesting ways to combat this serious threat, he suggested that there is a need to revitalize law courses and add an element of human psychology into them since that is one area which is not been touched by Artificial Intelligence till now. He stressed that lawyers are often contacted by people especially old and rich, seeking advice and counselling, which offers a fantastic role for lawyers to combine. He opined that some stream of Finance should be added in LL.B programme since there are lot of LL.Bs who are in managerial positions now- a days but they walked the path very slowly due to the lack of the required knowledge in Finance.
Addressing the participants, Dr. Ashok K Chauhan- Founder President, Amity Group encouraged them to follow the advice given by eminent Judges and guests and expressed with conviction that Indian lawyers cannot be superseded by their counterparts globally due to their incomparable legal acumen, debating skills and legal approach. He called upon the participants to regularly read the judgments of best judges to stay apprised with latest law insights and encouraged them to go for upcoming and interesting areas of Law such as Cyber Law and IPR.
Sharing his views and advising budding lawyers as to how to make a mark for themselves in Moot Court Competitions, the Chief Guest- Hon’ble Retd. Justice Mr. S. J. Mukhopadhaya (Supreme Court of India) and Chairman, National Company Law Appellate Tribunal called upon them to be cool, friendly and composed with the Judges in the Court;answer them politely and the way which is palatable to them. He encouraged them to see the mood of the Judges while presenting their case and sync with the frequency of the same. He called upon them to highlight the merits of their case and demerits of the others and present them in a form of capsule argument. He appreciated the performance of all the participating teams and congratulated them for the impressive arguments during the Competition.
Sharing her views, Hon’ble Justice Prathibha M Singh- Delhi High Court who herself participated in Jessup during her college days, narrated that Jessup journey has become different after the advent of technology which is a great enabler for participants to easily access American Journal of International Law , preparatory videos and videos of the experience of the participants on the Internet, which help participants to improve their mooting skills. Advising budding lawyers asto how to win Jessup Competition, she called upon them to be confident when they appear in the Moot Court and look into the eyes of the Judges while presenting their points. She stressed that there is no substitute for hard work and every participant just gets 2-3 months to prepare for Jessup. She called upon them to review their memorial for typographic errors since memorials are judged separately apart from the main competition. She implored Law Colleges and Universities to initiate Moot Court Funds for the interested students so that they don’t have to go around to Corporates and struggle, looking for funds to sponsor their participation in National and International Moot Competitions.
Hon’ble Justice Jayant Nath- Delhi High Court, while sharing his views, expressed his joy while judging the performance of two the finalists in the Semi-finals. He stated that Moot Court Competitions help in improving the mooting and articulation skills of budding lawyers and called upon the budding lawyers to take initiative and participate in as many moot competitions as they can during their college days so that they are better prepared for the profession later on.

During the ceremony, ten best Oralists and Ms. Vaishali from Gujrat National Law University was declared the” Best Oralist”
5 Best Memorials Awards were presented to NLU Orrisa, NLU Jodhpur, NLUI Bhopal, NLU Delhi and NLS University Bangalore
