International Yoga Day celebrations at Amity University
To commemorate the International Yoga Day, Amity University Uttar Pradesh conducted Yoga sessions instrumented by Yoga Instructors to spread an awareness about benefits of Yoga for holistic health and peace of mind for the Faculty Members, Staff and Students at University Campus, Sector 125, Noida.
During the day, 6 yoga sessions were organized wherein more than 900 participants learnt and practiced yoga.Additionally, over 500 employees of Axis bank, Union Bank of India,participants of skill development centre and defence personnel, who are undertaking training in Amity, also participated in the yoga camp held in Amity today.
Dr. S.C Manchanda, Senior Consultant Cardiologist, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and Dr. S. Lakshmi Kandhan, Assistant Professor, Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga delivered lectures during the occasion.
Presenting a brief on “Yoga- the Science behind it”, Dr. S.C Manchanda said that numerous studies have shown that regular practice of yoga and meditation can reduce psychosocial stress,anxiety and depression through several mechanisms. “Heart diseases are increasing despite of spreading vast awareness, however, Yoga appears to be promising in primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases.” he averred. He suggested that yoga should be used as a simple, cost effective and safe strategy to decrease the burden of heart disease throughout the world.
Sharing his views on “Importance ofYoga for the health”, Dr. S. Lakshmi Kandhan said that various diseases caused by lifestyle disorder can be treated through Yoga as it aims to bring balance into the body- physically, mentally and emotionally. He shared that yoga ispracticed as preventive medicine and for health promotion since ancient times.Dr Kandhan further briefed about various Yoga disciplines and practices, he pointed out that Yoga asanas build strength, flexibility and confidence.Regular practice of yoga can help loose weight, relieve stress, improve immunity and maintain a healthier lifestyle.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. W Selvamurthy, President, Amity Science Technology and Innovation Foundation said that International Yoga Day is an initiative of Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, after his suggestion at the United Nations General Assembly on 27 September 2014. He mentioned that recognizing the universal appeal of Yoga, the United Nations proclaimed 21st June as the International Day of Yoga with an aim to raise awareness about huge benefits of practicing Yoga worldwide. He highlighted that Amity believes in the holistic development ofevery individual and yoga is known for holistic approach to health and well-being. Thereby, Yoga is promoted as an essential practice throughout the year amongst Amitians.
