Prof. C.K. Varshney, Former Dean, Jawaharlal Nehru University delivers lecture on “Environmental Issues and Sustainable Development” at Amity University

Amity Institute of Environmental Toxicology, Safety and Management has taken a step in the direction of Sustainable Development for celebrating World Environment Day under the aegis of Amity Science & Technology Innovation Foundation (ASTIF). A lecture on the topic “Environmental Issues and Sustainable Development” was organised during the day. The lecture was presented by Prof. C.K. Varshney, former Dean & Professor of Ecology, School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Dr. Tanu Jindal, Director, Amity Institute of Environmental Toxicology, Safety and Management welcomed Prof. C.K. Varshney. Dr. Sunil Saran, Sr. Vice Chairman, Amity Science, Technology & Innovation Foundation presided over the lecture session.

Prof. Varshney talked about global environmental issues and sustainable development. He provided grounding in the wider environmental issues for sustainability. He also discussed the reducing of ecological and natural footprints. He also agreed with Prof. Tanu Jindal about the problem of groundwater contamination through nitrate in Delhi as brought out by her study. He described the trend of atmospheric CO2, which is accelerating upward from decade to decade. He explained sustainable development as “development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Brundtland Commission). He also emphasized the dissatisfactory economic growth and GDP of the country towards securing sustainable development as sanitation sector alone requires 7% GDP. Then he highlighted the importance of all the natural resources for example oxygen as we don’t have to pay anything and utilize it in every aspect of life whether it is driving a vehicle or every breath of all living organisms.
