Maj. Gen. A.K. Chaturvedi, Addl DG (Personnel), Engineer–in-Chief’s Branch, Army Headquarters delivers lecture on “Future wars will be fought for – Water” during AIC lecture series at Amity University
Maj. Gen. A.K. Chaturvedi, Addl DG (Personnel), Engineer–in-Chief’s Branch, Army Headquarters delivered lecture on “Future wars will be fought for – Water” during AIC lecture series at Amity University. This was 148th lecture under the AUC lecture series.
While presenting the lecture, Maj. Gen. A.K. Chaturvedi said that water is one of the 5 basic elements which is essential for life. Human settlements developed along with the rivers from the time immemorial and water calamities also causes decline of civilisations. Many wars were fought due to water in the past. Since 1940, around 40 incidents of war like conflict have been taken place. Maj. Gen Chaturvedi said that 79% of surface of Earth is covered by water. Around 1,400,00,000 cubic meters of water is available in world and out of which oceans have 96.5% of water. Ground water has 1.7% and Glacier water has 1.7% share of total water.
Maj. Gen. Chaturvedi said that the major causes for decline of water availability are:
1. High water demand in high yield variety of crops.
2. Effect of global warming - faster melting of glaciers.
3. Population Explosion
4. Water Pollution.
Maj. Chaturvedi said that in South Asia the major water disputes which may lead to future war are Afghanistan - Pakistan issue, India-Pakistan issue, India-China issue, India -Bangladesh issue, India-Nepal issue.
Dr. Ashok K. Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Group said that the issues raised by Maj. Gen. A.K. Chaturvedi are very timely and we as citizens of this country has to start our own initiatives to save our water resources. Dr. Chauhan said that projects should be undertaken in the direction of coverting ocean water into fresh water, removing toxicity like arsenic from ground water and conserving our bio diversity.
