Amity Humanity Foundation organises National Environment Awareness Campaign-Forests for Sustainable Livelihood

Amity Humanity Foundation (AHF) was granted a small project by the Ministry of Environment and Forests for the fifth time. AHF has been conducting it with the students of Amity International Schools. The theme for this year was ‘Forests for Sustainable Livelihood’.

With the blessings from the Chairperson, Dr. (Mrs) Ameeta Chauhan, Amity Humanity Foundation conducted it at the Amity International School, Pushp Vihar on the 14 February 2012.

In the first part of the programme students of classes VI and VII had participated in Poster Making and Slogan Writing Competitions respectively, and the class VIII students had visited the Government Horticultural Nursery at Hauz Rani where they saw many types of plants, mushroom cultivation, wormicompost etc.and picked up some wormicompost and onion saplings for the school.

In the second part of the programme, Prof. B.K.P.Sinha of Amity School of Natural Resources and Sustainable Development, AUUP was requested to be the Resource Person as well as to handle the interactive session for almost 200 hundred students from Class VI, VII and VIII. Apart from emphasizing many reasons for conserving forests, he also highlighted the fact that forests provide renewable energy resources. They asked very perceptive questions on the conflicting interests of livelihood and conservation of forests and the manner in which the forests help in regulating temperature.

Vice President, AHF, Maj. Gen. (Dr.) Surendar Kumar emphasised the need to learn more and more. Problems of climate change and environment were not talked about 40-50 years back but now we need to think it much more seriously.

Three students were adjudged first, second and third for painting and slogan writing competitions. For Painting, Simran Kapoor of VI-B got the first, Nandini Sharma of VI-A got the second and Shreya Rastogi VI-B got the third prize. Maitreyi Mendiratta of VII-C got the first, Ayushi Gupta of VII-D the Second and Divya Aggarwal of VII-C got the third prize in the slogan writing competition.

The programme came to an end with Dr. (Mrs.) Chanda Rani Akhouri, Officiating Director, AHF thanking the students for their enthusiastic participation, Prof B.K.P. Sinha and Maj. Gen. (Dr.) Surendar Kumar for finding time for the students and the Principal of AIS, Pushp Vihar Mrs. Ameeta Mohan to accommodate the programme amidst a very tight calendar for the school and sparing the teachers for successful completion of the programme.
