Amity University organises One Day National Seminar on “Life & Works of Rabindranath Tagore: Then & Now”

Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali polymath who reshaped India’s literature and music. He became the first non-European Nobel laureate by earning the 1913 Prize in Literature for his creation “Gitanjali”. Tagore modernized Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic strictures. To commemorate and celebrate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, Amity Institute of English Studies & Research (AIESR) and Amity Institute of Corporate Communications in association with College English Teacher Association (CETA) - C.C.S. University, Meerut organized One-Day National Seminar on “Life & Works of Rabindranath Tagore: Then & Now” at Amity University Campus, Sector-125, Noida.

Prof. Anisur Rahman, Department of English, Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi, Prof. Rizwan Khan, Associate Professor, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, Dr. Dhananjay Singh, Asst. Professor, Centre of English Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Dr. Vikas Sharma, Associate Professor & Head – DAV PG College, Bulandshahar, Maj. Gen K. Jai Singh, Vice Chancellor, Amity University, H.A. Arfi, IAS (Retd.), Director AICC & AIESR inaugurated the Seminar.

H.A. Arfi, IAS (Retd.), Director, Amity Institute of Corporate Communication (AICC) and Amity Institute of English Studies & Research (AIESR) highlighted on the perennial significance and contemporaneity of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in his Welcome Address.

Prof. Anisur Rehman, Department of English, Jamia Millia Islamia, gave the inaugural address. He mentioned about the literary corpus of Gurudev, his spiritual and Sufi approach, his blend of tradition and modernism. Stating Tagore’s views on education, he emphasized that real education should be released from regular classroom teaching to holistic education beyond the boundaries of cste, colour and religion.

Maj. Gen K. Jai Singh, Vice Chancellor, Amity University highlighted that the works of Tagore symbolize Indian Tradition & Culture. According to Maj. Gen Singh, Gurudev epitomized principles and wanted the youth to inculcate those in their lives. He urged the youth of today to inculcate the reading habit in their lives.

Prof. Rizwan Khan, Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University began his keynote address by saying without any exaggeration that we have not done enough justice to Tagore. He mentioned that Tagore is not even prescribed in the syllabus of most Universities of India and his works should be introduced. He also mentioned that an entire park has been named after Gurudev as Tagore Park in Budapest, Hungary to acknowledge his universality. He endorsed his viewpoint by stating that for us, simply paying tribute was not enough but implementing his ideas and thoughts was need of the hour.

Souvenir of the Seminar was also released during the occasion. Students, faculty members, Senior officials of Amity University participated in the Seminar.
