ABS & ASET organize a Panel Discussion - “Reflections - Traditional Intolerance” during Amity Human Values Quarter
Amity School of Engineering and Technology and Amity Business School , Noida organized a Panel Discussion titled “Reflections - Traditional Intolerance” as part of the Amity Human Values Quarter.
Dr. Abha Singh, Director, Amity Institute of Psychology & Allied Sciences, Ms. Savita Mehta, Vice President, Media Department and Prof. S.K. Malhotra, Amity Business School judged the participants on three parameters i.e. Communication, Content and Logic & Reasoning in their discussion on whether traditional values are hindrance to growth.
Shreya Sitaram and Kunal Mathur from Amity School of Business won the first prize of the debate competition. Iti Tandon and Arjun Prasad from Amity School of Engineering and Technology were announced runners up.
Eight teams from various institutions from Delhi NCR participated in the Panel Discussion which was divided into various segments. First segment focused on the question that “Do Conservative traditions and few misguided ideas are proving to be a hindrance in the path of Progress and Development”. Team from Guru Tegh Bahadur Institute of Technology, New Delhi started the discussion by saying that what is right for someone may not be good for others. Education defines how much liberal is the person. Team from PDM College of Engineering, Bahadurgarh said that tradition is mere rules followed by our ancestors which we are following.
Team from Amity Institute of Telecom Technology and Management said that Diversity of India is the main attraction of India and we were liberal hundred of year before but not now. Team from Amity Business School argued that tradition is the trade mark of any country, to which team from Amity School of Business counter argued that tradition is a right way to follow. Team from Amity Institute of Psychology & Allied Sciences was of the view that it is because of tradition and belief our country is backward. Old is gold but present is platinum.
Second segment focused on the question that Indians who are settled abroad follow more traditions than Indians living in India to which PDM College of Engineering replied that people in abroad miss Indian culture, while team from Amity School of Engineering and Technology said that it is way of telling the world that we are Indians. Team from University School of Law, GGSIP University said that it gives a sense of connectivity with the country while team from Amity Business School said that its all about feeling nostalgic and missing India.
Jury member of Panel Discussion, Prof. S.K. Malhotra, Amity Business School said that we have to keep balance between tradition and modernity. Courtesy, virtue, religion and faith are the four pillars of Indian civilization.
Prof. Abha Singh, Director, Amity Institute of Psychology & Allied Sciences said that Amity believes in modernity blending with tradition. Today there is a need to learn best of east and best of west and not just blindly following west. According to a survey Indians are most happiest in the world because they can laugh on themselves.
In order to inculcate human values amongst its students, all the institutions of Amity observe “Human Values Quarter” from January 28, 2012 to April 27, 2012. During these three months several activities such as workshops/debates/plays/drama/poster making/essay competition/ poem contest are being organized with a focus to highlight and promote human values. Human Values Quarter will inspire the students and entire Amity fraternity to dedicate themselves to the cause of the society.
