Ms. Anu Narula, Advocate delivers a lecture on “Empowerment of women” during AIC lecture series at Amity University

The Amity International Centre organized its 146th lecture as a part of their Lecture Series with the topic being “Empowerment of women”. The speaker for the lecture was the renowned Advocate Ms. Anu Narula, who interacted with Faculty members, department heads and HOI’s of Amity University.

The speaker, Ms. Narula gave a detailed talk on the topic, sharing her personal experiences and opinions in an upfront manner. She stressed mainly on subjective topics such as sensitization and equality.

The discussion began with defining empowerment, especially in context of the female gender. Empowerment was defined as ‘opportunities to take independent decisions with authority, power and responsibility’. A woman needs to make her own decisions, whether minor or major, regarding her own life. The discussion outlined the three basic pathways towards empowerment - Education, Awareness and Sensitization.

Coursing through history, particularly Indian, women have been kept in high regard, on the pedestal of being gods and supreme powers. But considering the present era, this regard has come a long way and has plummeted to the pits. So much so, that a set of moral codes have been kept for a woman’s ‘conduct’. Women are being objectified, and their image has coursed from being a ‘Devi’ (Goddess) to a vamp.

The speaker identified The National Policy of Empowerment (2001) and the success it has achieved. Though she also mentioned her concerns over the misuse of certain laws and amendments by some people, especially Anti-Dowry laws, leading to victimization and exploitation. The discussion ended with a Question-Answer session, focusing on issues such as Dowry, Education, Awareness and Sensitization. Dr. Ashok K. Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Group expressed his support for the cause and the role Amity Group plays in this regard.
