National Law University, New Delhi wins the North India Round of Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition at Amity Law School, Delhi

National Law University, New Delhi defeated Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur in India (North) Round of Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition held at Amity Law School, Delhi and now both the finalists have secure place in the Washington DC round of Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.

The winner of Best Student Advocate Award went to Mr. Aritra Roy of National Law Univerity, Jodhpur. Winner of the Memorial Award went to Gujarat National Law University and best all round speaker award was grabbed by Mr. Akshay from National Law University, Delhi

The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is the world largest moot court competition, with participants from over 500 law schools in more than 80 countries. Amity Law School in association with Surana & Surana International Attorneys organized the India (North) Round from January 20 – 22, 2012 at Amity Law School, Delhi at Amity University Campus, Sector- 125, Noida.

During Semi finals Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur defeated Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala and National Law University, New Delhi defeated Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar.

While distributing the prizes to the winners of the Moot Court Competition Chief Guest of the occasion Hon’ble Mr. Justice Dipak Misra, Judge, Supreme Court of India said that there is difference between an Advocate and a lawyer. Advocate has the tremendous capacity of articulation, building logic, adopting sense of methodology and art of craftsmanship. Lawyer has a sense of persuasion, deep understanding of intricacy of problems and knows nuances of law. Students of law must have the attitude of good lawyer and advocate. Justice Misra also described the attributes which any budding lawyer should not posses in legal profession i.e. should not have any affinity with client, should not be envy, should not have fear before the judge and should not have greed. A good lawyer should have knowledge of all subjects including history, philosophy, psychology, sociology. Justice Misra advised the students to have balance in philosophy of constitution and understand the nuances of law thoroughly with a logical approach.

Dr.Yasukata Fukahori, Dy. Secretary General, Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization opined that international laws are very important to understand for law students. Many foreign companies are investing in India which will result in increasing opportunities to work with foreign companies and foreign people.

Mr. Lalit Bhasin, Advocate – Supreme Court of India and Honorary President, Amity Law School said that participation in Moot Court competition gives sense of satisfaction. While advising budding lawyers, Mr. Bhasin said that if you want to be member of legal profession than you have to work hard. Legal profession is a jealous profession. There is no fixed working hours and is on going education for even judges, Lawyer never retires, he just drps dead. Mr. Bhasin said that role of legal profession is changing due to changes in technology. Now the client can search all the legal matters from the internet. Educational pattern should also change keeping in mind the technological advancement. Mr. Bhasin advised students that you have some National duties and responsibilities. We all have professional social responsibility and through which we can address the need of the poor who have no means to fight litigation.

Mr. Atul Chauhan, Chancellor, Amity University said that there will be thousands of students who will pass out with law degrees but very few will achieve heights, will have spark to succeed, will have confidence, determination to work hard. Participants of Jessup Moot Court are different from all other law students because they possess all these qualities. Mr. Chauhan advised students to always think of helping the society and to respect elders and value heritage.

Welcoming the august gathering, Prof. M.K. Balachandran, Director - Amity Law School said that the Moot Court is one of the primary modes to inculcate in law students a capacity to think while on feet. Their knowledge of facts and law is tested by the bench of 3 or more judges drawn from amongst senior judges, leading counsels, diplomats and academics who are invited to assess the teams. Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. This year theme of the competition addresses the legality of the destruction of a cultural site and State responsibility for a regional operation.

Earlier while inaugurating the Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition, Mr. Narinder Singh, Additional Secretary, Legal & Treaties Division, Ministry of External Affairs and Member, International Law Commission, United Nations said that “In the last century, large number of international treaties have been adopted. International law includes not only inter country disputes but also issues related to individuals including issues arising during armed conflicts. There are at present 23 International and regional courts which cover different areas of international laws. Mr. Singh said protection of human rights and protection of cultural site during armed conflicts is the state responsibility.”

Dr. Hassan Soleimani, Dy. Secretary General, Asian-African Legal Consultative Organisation, Mr. Neeraj Kishan Kaul, Sr. Advocate, Supreme Court of India were present during the inauguration.
