Over 400 students from India and Abroad to discuss about Global Issues and their Resolutions during AMIMUN 2018 at Amity University
To familiarize the students with pressingglobal issues and workings of the United Nations Organization, Amity UniversityUttar Pradesh in collaboration withthe United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan started 7th Amity International Model United Nations (AMIMUN–2018) Conference on the theme of “Ignition for Tomorrow” at Amity UniversityNoida Campus.
Amity International Model United Nations (AMIMUN 2018) is asimulation of the United Nations which spans over a period of three days. AtAMIMUN, delegates learn and understand the art of diplomacy, internationalrelations and the United Nations.
During AMIMUN, the delegates will debate on issues that confrontworld leaders and will subsequently, draft resolutions that can enable theUnited Nations to tackle the same. The agendas of the committees include"MARS 2022: Formulating a new mission plan for Mining and Utilisation ofResources in Space on the Martian Territory”, "Negotiations to furtherliberalize trade on non-agriculture market access", "Accountabilityfor the atrocities committed by the UN Peacekeeping Forces", "Discussingimplementation of nuclear safeguards in the Middle East" and "Theprotection of indigenious minority groups"
Over 400 Delegates from 51 Colleges across the globe includingUnited Kingdom, Morocco, Brazil, Egypt, Russia, Nepal, Afghanistan, Mauritius,India and South Sudan participated in the International Conference
Addressing the gathering, His Excellency Mr. NadirPatel, Canadian High Commissioner said that education is the bestigniter for all kinds of initiatives and success. He called upon the studentsto think differently and break the stereotypes. Addressing the participant asbrand ambassadors, His Excellency Mr Patel opined that engaging youth in policymaking and providing them with such opportunities will lead to development andupliftment of the world. He pointed out that both India and Canada havecontributed significantly in UN activities and goals and hence, can furtherplay leadership roles through United Nations.
Sharing his views, Mr. Md. Manuar Mukarram, SecondSecretary, Bangladesh High Commission said that such platforms aretrue learning opportunities for students wherein they gain knowledge aboutpreliminary perspective of International affairs and the United Nations whichhelp them to unlock their imagination and creativity. He further added thatit’s not easy to take on the role of a World leader and deliberate uponsolutions for various core issues but this endeavor will aid in developingdebating and negotiation skills in the future leaders. He pointed out that itis important for every citizen to be part of the movement as together only wecan bring a positive change in the society. Mr. Mukarram highlighted fiveaspects to address to ignite the future including “International efforts tocombat terrorism and addressing its root causes”, “Creating a poverty freesociety to establish sustainable peace”, “Regional and sub regionalcollaborations to foster sustainable development”, ‘Focusing on theimplementation and achievement of Sustainable Development Goals to promoteinclusive societies” and finally, “Effectively dealing with environment”. Heopined that in order to manage all these areas, United Nations has to act as acustodian of global peace, law and order, security, human rights anddevelopment to make the world inclusive, participatory and transparent.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Aseem Chauhan, Hon’bleChancellor, Amity University said that the best way to ignite theminds of students is to put forward role models and leaders who they canemulate and learn from. He shared that in the coming decade, the world willwitness more transformational changes in every sector and India will contributesignificantly in the global context. Dr. Chauhan called upon the students totake advantage of the opportunity and be apart of national development.
During the occasion, Mr. Apoorv Om, National Awardee andUNESCO Youth Volunteer as Peace Leader shared his experience at UNESCOHeadquarters in Paris.
Mr. Derek Westfall, Political Deputy Minister Counselor, USEmbassy and Mr. Amol Chauhan werealso present during the inauguration ceremony of AIMUN 2018.
This was followed by Gavel Ceremony, where gavels were presentedto the top Secretariat positions and Executive Board members. Chief Guest Dr.Aseem Chauhan and His Excellency Mr. Nadir Patel provided the Gavel to Prof.(Dr.) Alpana Kakkar , Chairperson AMIMUN and Mr. Aditya Sundray , SecretaryGeneral . This symbolized the transferof faith and confidence in the Secretary-General and his team. The ExecutiveBoard, in turn, was presented with gavels representative of the transfer ofauthority from the Secretary-General.
Chargé d’Affaires, AMIMUN ’18, Mr. Shikhir Sapra, delivered theVote of Thanks and expressed gratitude on behalf of the organizing team for allDignitaries, Executive Board, Advisory Board, Faculty Organizing Committee andAdvisors, and the delegates.
Secretary-General, AMIMUN ’18, Aditya Sundaray, declared theconference open with the strike of his gavel. This concluded the OpeningCeremony.
AMIMUN’18 will witness the simulation of 8 conventionalcommittees – SPECPOL (Special Political and Decolonisation Committee), IAEA(International Atomic Energy Agency), UNESCO (UN Educational, Scientific andCultural Organisation), UNICEF (UN International Children's Emergency Fund),WTO (World Trade Organisation), UNSC (United Nations Security Council), WHSR(White House Situation Room) and NASA-SpaceX Bilateral Meet. These committeeswill keep in tow the traditional spirit of MUNs and will prove to be a groundfor fruitful discourse and discussions.
