Amity Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences, AUUP organised a Guest Lecture on ‘Making Teacher Education Inclusive’ by eminent academician Prof. (Dr.) Smriti Swarup, Former Director of Centre of Special Education and Dean Faculty of Education, SNDT Women’s University,Mumbai at University Campus, Sector-125, Noida
Dr. Swarup is an eminent psycho-educationist, clinical psychologist, and a teacher educator having more than 30 years of experience in teaching,research, educational planning and administration in the area of education and special education. She has been actively involved in academics, teacher training and program development for children with special needs. She has developed various psychometric tests for schools and industry and a series of diagnostic tests in the area of Specific Learning Disabilities. Dr. Smriti Swarup is an expert member of various committees of the Govt. of India ,Universities, National Institutes of various Disabilities, UGC, RCI, NCTE,NCERT, AND NAAC. Widely travelled, she had academic experience in UK, Canada,Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Japan.
The prime objective of the guest lecture was to orient the Special Educators, Teachers (from both regular and special education ) on the needs,methods and strategies of Inclusive Curriculum to be implemented as per Right to Education and Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016.
Addressing the students, Dr. Jayanti Pujari, Associate Professor and Director, AIRS said, “The efforts of the government over the last two and a half decades have been aimed at providing comprehensive range of services for education of children with disabilities. Inclusive Education has evolved as a movement to challenge exclusionary policies and practices and has gained ground over the past decade to become a favoured approach in addressing the learning needs of all students in regular schools and classrooms. As we continue our journey further into the21st Century, we are conscious and committed to our role as agents of social transformation and promotion of Inclusive development.”
Dr. Smriti Swarup, during her lecture, said, “All children live together and learn together. We are the advocates and we have to include children with special needs in the inclusive society. The RPWD Act 2016 is a milestone achievement in the field of Special Education which has emphasized largely on children with Specific Learning Disabilities and inclusion for all. She averred that the gap between teacher competencies and the child’s learning needs to be bridged, making an overt commitment to celebrate human diversity and difference in all its forms.”

The lecture was immensely beneficial for the professionals and teachers, giving insight into the implementation of Inclusive Curriculum, which is the call of the hour. The guest lecture was attended by Special Educators from Amity International School(Delhi-NCR), Genesis Global School (Noida), Mata Bhagwanti Chadha Niketan(Noida) and Ridge Valley School (Gurugram) and the student fraternity of AmityInstitute of Rehabilitation Sciences.
