“Government and Social Workers need to work together to make an impact in the society” suggest experts during National Social Work Conference at Amity
Amity Institute of Social Sciences organized a day long National Social Work Conference- 2017 on the theme “New Dimensions and Challenges of Social Work:The Road Map Ahead” at Amity University Campus, Sector-125, Noida.
The Conference was organized in association with Uttar Pradesh Association of Professional Social Workers and National Association of Professional Social Workers (NAPSW) and was supported by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare,GOI.
Sri Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Prof. R.R Singh, Former Director, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Prof.Sanjay Bhatt- President, NAPSWI, DU, Prof. Abha Singh, Dean, Faculty of Arts, Journalism,Communication, Humanities & Social Sciences, Amity University and Prof.(Dr.) Nirupama Prakash, Director, Amity Institute of Social Sciences inaugurated the Conference.
Welcoming the distinguished guests, Prof. (Dr.)Nirupama Prakash, Director, Amity Institute of Social Sciences stated that the Conference aims to assess the status of Social Work Education and Practice and to comprehend major global and regional socio-economic,political changes and their implications for Social Work Education and Practice. She stressed that Social Work cannot be devoid of human values and apprised the gathering with various initiatives and events which are regularly organised in Amity to inculcate human values in the students including Amity Human Values Quarter .
Sharing his views, Sri Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated that the magnitude of problems faced by people in society is huge; something has happened to the social fabric. People commit suicides and nobody comes out to help or listen to their problems. He stressed that Social welfare workers have been working with Government to provide support to the families, thereby, making an impact in society. He called upon the young Social workers to partner with Government in fighting the humongous mental health challenges and carry forward the spirit of ownership in terms of delivery, energy and a burning desire to make an impact in the society.
Prof. Sanjay Bhatt- President, NAPSWI, Delhi University, while addressing the gathering, remarked that Social welfare as a profession has completed 80 years in India and the road ahead is full of challenges. He shared that with globalization, the number of Institutes offering Social Welfare programmes increased manifold and till 2016, the number became 526 with over20, 000 students graduating every year. He stated the Social Work Profession has become an inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary and the challenge is to connect the needs and demands of the people with Social Work professionals. He shared that Social work has been recognized as youngest Profession in the world and there is a huge demand for Social work professionals who are committed to continual enhancement of their knowledge. He stressed upon the need to update the curriculum of Social Work education after every 3 years to accommodate the latest changes and to keep pace with the problems faced by the people in society. He suggested adopting a systematic approach to identify and honor the Social work Professionals who are doing exceptionally brilliant work so that the awareness regarding the importance of the social work spreads.
The inauguration was followed by Plenary Sessions wherein eminent social workers, NGO functionaries, Government Officials, UNICEF officials and members of NAPSWI and UPAPSW presented their research papers ontopics such as “Psycho-social impact of demonetization on Unorganized sector workers in Delhi-NCR”,“Criminal Justice System in India: A study of crime against women: legality and social implications”, “Gender Inequality in India”, “Practicing Gender aware social work within police”, “Women's reproductive rights & social work practice”, “Stress& burden among care givers of individuals suffering from schizophrenia& bipolar effective disorder”, “Adolescent female sex worker and unsafe abortion: a case study of female sex workers in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi”,and others
